No Smoking - it's the law
Alderwoman Marguerite Fruge-Simpson was ready to introduce an ordinance Tuesday night penalizing smoking in city facilities and vehicles but relented when told state law already forbids it.
Her message to all and sundry: Obey the law or she’ll be back.
Fruge-Simpson said she had received complaints about smoking occurring in some parts of City Hall.
She noted the penalty for individuals and/or employers for violating state law against smoking in public facilities and talked about adding the prohibition and fines to the city code.
But City Attorney Jacque Pucheu said that is not necessary because state law takes precedence on the matter.
That being the case, she said, it’s time that everyone follow the law.
The council and the mayor agreed.
