LEROY – What turned out to be a defensive match-up Friday night saw the North Vermilion Patriots claim a 14-0 district win over the Rayne High Wolves in week eight of the 2009 season

“A win is a win, and that‘s what counts,” noted Patriot head coach Steve Lotief on Friday’s win over the Wolves. “Sure, we had some jitters from some of our younger players, but that’s something we’ll have to work out.”

The win placed the Patriots at 6-2 overall and 2-1 in district play, with a possible playoff contention. The Wolves are still left without a win on the season.

“We did well on defense,” commented Rayne head coach Curt Ware. “Our running game did pretty well. We just need to add a few yards in the air.”

The Wolves were unable to muster any yards in the passing column against the Patriots, while turning in 117 in the rushing column.

With leading rusher Brody Bourque, the Wolves were led on the ground by Tre Leon with 73 yards on 15 carries, followed by Myles Pryor with 39 yards and Dylan Ware turning in 17.

The Wolves were within scoring distance throughout the contest, but turnovers once again played an important part, seeing one of three fumbles resulting in a touchdown drive for North Vermilion.

Both of North Vermilion’s scoring drives were direct results of touchdown runs by Anthony Williams, one each in the first and final quarters of action, and both from inside the three-yard line.

The first scoring drive for the Patriots came as a direct result of their running game, seeing Williams and Jabian Kern chipping away at the Rayne defense. Quarterback Jared Broussard also contributed to the scoring drive with two keepers in the first quarter score for North Vermilion.

Broussard also connected with his receivers for three receptions for 28 yards, a small percentage of 248 total offensive yards for the Patriots.

The second score for the Patriots came at the start of the last quarter as Williams muscled through for a touch from one yard out despite a forced fumble by Rayne’s Ryan Larry.

Jonathan Simon booted both extra points for the remaining North Vermilion points on the night.

As defense was the game of the evening, the Wolves were led by Gavin Broussard, Dylan Ware and Aaron Chaisson, each with a fumble recovery.

For the Patriots, fumbles were recovered by Zack Bourque with two and another by Jared Broussard.

Leading tacklers for Rayne High on the evening were Ryan Larry, Tyler Venable, Shelby Thibodeaux, Tyler Jennings, Andrew Abshire, Gavin Broussard, Ty Mouton and Scott Curtis.

The Rayne offense was held at bay by the following North Vermilion tacklers: Jonathan Simon, Zack Bourque, Taylor Price, Chase Hardy and Devan Necaisse.
