Northside Christian's Clement lands spot on Class C All-State team

CROWLEY - Northside Christian sophomore Madisyn Clement started the 2013 prep softball season as an outfielder and then moved to pitcher more than halfway through the season.

The move paid huge dividends for her and her team: she cut the team’s walks in half and helped lead the Lady Warriors to their inaugural state semifinal appearance where they fell to eventual state champion Hackberry at the Fast Pitch 56 Tournament.

For her efforts, Clement earned a spot on the Class C All-State softball team that was voted on by a panel of the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.

Clement struck out 34 in 61 innings on the mound. She was an offensive threat as well, hitting .297 with six doubles, two triples and 19 RBI while striking out just four times in 92 plate appearances.

Hackberry, which defeated Georgetown 2-1 in the title game, landed four players on the first team, including Sydney Broussard, who earned Outstanding Player honors. The sophomore hit .368 on the season with 32 runs scored and seven triples.

Broussard is joined on the 2013 first-team by teammates Sami Little, who earned Outstanding Player honors in 2012, Jolie Trahan and Mattie Stine. Little hit .423 with 25 RBI, Trahan went 16-2 on the mound and Stine hit .446.

Family Christian repeated as champions in baseball and landed five players on the first team, including Ben Chauvin who received Outstanding Player honors for the second straight year. Chauvin racked up a record of 10-2 on the mound and he hit .494. He is joined on the team by senior pitcher M.J. Frazer (10-0), senior leadoff hitter Tyler Randall (.481), senior hitter Richard Hopkins (.360, 32 RBI) and sophomore Mason Diaz (.480).

Georgetown’s Cindy Maxwell was named Softball Coach of the Year, while Maurepas’ Anthony Gregoire was named Baseball Coach of the Year.

Three members of Georgetown’s state runner-up softball team earned all-state honors: senior Savanah Lincecum (.415) and juniors Tanner Maxwell (15-7) and Felicity Traylor (.427).

Starks senior Ciara Bussell (.412), Starks sophomore Wendy Gillet (.375), Kilbourne sophomore Star Jones (.384), Family Christian senior Megan Smith (.690), Calvin junior pitcher Jancee Lashley (11-4), Elizabeth junior catcher Taylor Brown (.794), St. Joseph junior outfielder Ashley Knight (.500) and Maurepas freshman Lacy Loupe (.469) also received softball honors.

State baseball runner-up Claiborne Christian had one honoree, senior pitcher Zach Osbon who went 6-7 while striking out 113.

Elizabeth junior catcher Christian Perkins (.498), Elizabeth senior infielder Jordan Sutterfield (.421), Elizabeth senior pitcher Ian Morgan (10-0), Elizabeth senior first baseman Kelby Friday (.430), Ebarb senior Ryan Garcia (.480), Maurepas junior Jace Berthelot (8-2), Maurepas freshman Chaz Scivicque (.423), Georgetown junior Zach Lasyone (.417), Georgetown senior Treavor Curtis (31 RBI) and Georgetown junior Jace Sauce (.493) round out the rest of the team.
