Notre Dame Lady Pios knock off Iota
IOTA – The Notre Dame Lady Pios took control early and never looked back, claiming a three-game victory (25-13, 25-13, 25-19) over Iota Tuesday.
The victory capped a three-game stretch which saw the Lady Pios (14-9, 2-0) open league play last week with straight-set victories over defending Division II state champion Catholic High of New Iberia and defending Division IV champion state champion St. Thomas More.
Lady Pios’ coach Tara Young has long been an advocate of establishing the middle game at the net in her formula for success. Against Iota, the middle belonged to Alaina Savoy and Katherine Kirsch, who teamed up for a performance that was near perfection.
The duo combined for 22 kills, with Savoy leading the way with 14 and Kirsch adding nine. Savoy chipped in with eight digs, three service aces and two blocks. Kirsch also had two blocks.
Notre Dame blasted 17 kills in the first game with Savoy lighting up the Lady Dogs for seven. Allison Leonards knocked down four winners and Kirsch added three. Savoy had another three-point streak to put the Lady Pios up 16-9 and when the senior rotated off the front row, Leonards picked up the slack with two cross-court winners from the left side.
Kirsch stepped in for two quick set kills in the middle, including the game winner.
Savoy went back to work in the second game, taking a set from Alex Miller to put the Lady Pios up 4-3 on another untouched kill. Megan Malmay and Miller blasted winners from the left side, Marie Ledet dropped in two kills and Malmay scored again to make it 14-7.
Savoy returned to the middle net with three more points and added an ace as the Lady Pios extended the lead to 21-10. Mallory Chiasson offered two dig passes that Miller set for Ledet and Leonards to convert kills and close out the game.
Iota led 14-11 in the third game before Notre Dame battled back on a Ledet ace, a Savoy kill and a block down winner from Kirsch to tie it at 14-14. Kirsch then scored three straight points and Malmay answered Iota for a 19-16 lead.
Leonards later blasted a kill off two Iota blockers to make it 22-17 and Savoy got a quick set winner. Miller closed out the match by blocking a kill attempt that the Lady Dogs made two unsuccessful diving attempts to keep alive.
Miller logged 20 assists and seven digs, splitting setting duties with Ledet, who finished with 19 assists, six kills, three digs, three aces and a clock. Leonards had six kills, 14 digs and an ace.
Chiasson paced the Lady Pios’ back row defense with a team-leading 27 digs. Taylor Boulet added nine digs and Malmay had six kills and three digs.
Madison Meche paced Iota with four kills and seven blocks while Kaylee Richard, Taylor Deville and Madelyn LeJeune each had two kills. Deville also added nine blocks and LeJeune had five.
Claire LeJeune and Paige Soirez racked up 24 and 16 digs respectively while Melinda Russell had 13 digs and one ace and Adalie Wriborg had 14 assists and one ace
The Lady Pios closed out the first round of district play on the road yesterday at West St. Mary while Iota played Catholic High of New Iberia. Results from those two contests were not available at press time.
