Notre Dame names teacher of the year

Notre Dame High School of Acadia Parish has recently named Coach Tara Young as teacher of the year for the 2009-2010 school term.

Young is a native of Tracy, California and is the daughter of Billy and Annie Ross and she has one brother, Wyatt.

She began her intercollegiate volleyball career at Bakersfield College in Bakersfield, CA where she was team captain for two years. In 1984, Coach Young was named Most Valuable Player and she earned the All Metropolitan Award.

Young attended the University of Nebraska at Omaha and graduated Cum Laude with a bachelor of arts degree in history in 1989. The following summer, she traveled to Cambridge, England to attend their summer school program.

In 1992, as a teaching assistant at University of Nebraska, Omaha, she completed requirements for a master’s degree in history.

Her teaching career continued at Mira Costa Community College in Oceanside, CA and Delgado Community College in New Orleans.

It was in August of 1999 that Young made her way to Notre Dame as a P.E. teacher and volleyball coach.

Each year Young’s teams have been named district champs and have played in the state tournament ten times. In 2007, she lead the Notre Dame volleyball team to a state championship, earning her State Coach of the Year honors.

As Social Studies department chair, Coach Young teaches American History, World History and Civics. She has a unique perspective and brings out the very best in her students as they study history and government. As director of parking, she makes sure that every vehicle on the campus is in its proper space.

Coach Young’s greatest achievement is her son, Waylon.

Student comments about Coach Young include: “Coach Young is a great teacher because her class is interesting, enjoyable and you always leave having learned something new,” and “She treats us like college students by challenging us to use outside sources and websites to complete the assignments. She is tenacious in the classroom and on the volleyball court.”

Principal Cindy Istre praised Coach Young in the following manner, “Coach Young has an exemplary work ethic … her dedication both in the classroom, and on the court with her team, are truly admirable. She cares about her students and players and strives to be a role model for them. Coach Young utilizes her competitive spirit and natural gifts to work toward being the best she can be. On behalf of Notre Dame, I am happy to congratulate Tara on this honor!”
