CHURCH POINT – Notre Dame made huge strides in the District 5-AAA race Tuesday, pulling off a key road sweep of Church Point.

The Lady Pios slipped past the Lady Bears, 55-54, in the first game and the Pios snuck away with a 46-43 win over the Bears in the nightcap.

The victory for the Lady Pios (14-7) places them in a three-way tie for first place with Church Point and Northwest, all at 3-1.

“This was a huge victory for us,” said Notre Dame girls’ coach Nolan Theriot following the victory, the 200th of his career. “You know, if we lose, we’re in third place heading into the second round. We just really stepped up tonight.”

Celia Charles played a huge role in the victory, scoring 10 of her game-high 28 points in the fourth quarter. Her block of a Shalen Handy shot which was followed by a coast-to-coast layup with under a minute to go gave the Lady Pios a 3-point cushion.

“Celia’s ability to hit shots from the outside when they (Church Point) were in a zone was key for us,” said Theriot. “You could tell she was energized and the motor wasn’t stopping.”

Notre Dame’s defense also played a key role, holding Handy to just two points in the second half and seven overall.

“Katherine Parsley came in off the bench and did a great job on defense for us,” said Theroit of his sophomore forward. “She played the last 10 minutes on Handy and shut her down. She played some quality minutes that helped us ice the game.”

Church Point cut the lead to one (55-54) with about 12 seconds remaining, but the Lady Bears failed to score again.

Taylor Simon was the only other Lady Pio in double figures with 17 points. Kylie Pannell followed with five points, Alex Boulet added four and Andre Lyons scored one.

Deniseo Citizen paced Church Point with 19 points and Jalisa Citizen scored 12.

In the boys’ game, Notre Dame forwards Nick Zaunbrecher and Taylor Thibodeaux combined for 27 points to help lead the Pios to their first league victory.

Notre Dame (10-14, 1-1) trailed 15-14 in the first quarter before taking a 27-25 advantage at the half.

The Pios increased their lead to 39-34 in the third quarter before being outscored 9-7 in the fourth.

Thibodeaux led the Pios with 14 points while Zaunbrecher and Morgan Allen each scored 13.

Robert Johnson and John Graf each added two points and Charlie Ropp scored one.

Church Point was paced by Torey Boudreaux with 13 points and Malcolm Kennerson with nine.

Both the Pios and Lady Pios will step out of district play Friday when they play host to Iowa. The girls’ game is slated for 6 o’clock with the boys’ to follow.
