Notre Dame tennis action
RAYNE - Notre Dame’s boys’ tennis team opened the 2010 campaign with a 6-4 victory over the Abbeville Wildcats earlier in the week at Mauboules Park.
Newcomer Charlie Mayeux paced the Pios with a solid performance at No. 1 in singles action, topping John Paul Nguyen, 8-2. Max John, playing in the No. 2 spot, lost to Luis Lopez (8-3).
The Pios bounced back with victories at the fourth and fifth courts when Robert Lavergne defeated David Nguyen (8-6) and Connor Broussard topped Kevin Nguyen (8-4).
In doubles action, defending regional champions Ryan Benson and Joe Schmid were upset by John Paul Nguyen and Luis Lopez, 8-5.
The Pios claimed victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions with Will Fruge and John Rothermel winning 8-6, and Paul Guinn and Steven Dupuis claiming a 8-3 win.
At No. 4, William Leger and Evan Deviller dropped an 8-4 match to Brandon Petry and Edward Polite.
Casey Robichaux and Connor Broussard rounded out the scoring for the Pios with an 8-4 victory over Randy Pham and Jonathan Tran.
Notre Dame’s girls’ tennis team lost a close 3-2 decision to the Academy of the Sacred Heart Thursday.
At #1, Katie Reggie was defeated by Adrianna Vallee.
Notre Dame captured two of the three doubles matches. At #2, Caroline Nickel and Tommie Anzalone won 8-3. At #3, Senior Sydney Hebert teamed with Freshman Natalie Benson for a 8-0 win.
In the decisive #1 doubles match, Crowley’s Mia Fruge’ teamed with Michelle Gad to defeat Notre Dame’s Carli Thibodeaux and Natalie John in a close 8-6 match.
