Notre Dame trio earns All-District soccer honors

CROWLEY – The Notre Dame soccer team recorded one of its best seasons in the school’s history in 2010, finishing 9-3 during the regular season and reaching the playoffs as the No. 18 seed.

It was Notre Dame’s first postseason appearance since the 2001-2002 season.

Much of the Pios’ success was due to the trio of Jonathon Besse, Hunter Stover and James Angelle - all first-team selections on the All-District team that was recently announced.

Besse was named the Offensive Most Valuable Player in the district after carrying much of the scoring load for the Pios. The senior forward logged 22 of the Pios’ 41 goals on the season.

Besse is joined offensively by standout midfielder Hunter Stover, who was second on the Pios’ scoring list with seven goals and four assists.

James Angelle also made the first team after leading a stellar defensive unit that allowed just 15 goals heading into the playoffs.

Catholic High, which eliminated the Pios in the playoffs, 2-1, and was itself upended in the second round of the playoffs by state semifinalist and No. 2 seed Menard, landed six players on the first team, including Overall MVP Brock Romero.

Joining Romero are teammates Grant Quinlan and Thomas Caffery as midfielders, James Simon and Jordan Durand as defenders and Ian Bordes at goalkeeper.

Erath, led by Defensive MVP Jeremy Broussard landed four on the team. Miles Guy and Connor Cheek are listed as midfielders while Josh Harrington made it at forward.

Carson Schexnaider was the lone selection from Abbeville as a defender.

Notre Dame also landed two players on the second team in senior midfielder Brandon Benoit and defender Sean Delahoussaye.

Honorable mention selections for Notre Dame include seniors Austin Meche and Robert Lavergne as well as junior Zac D’Aquin.
