Notre Dame's Gossen, Broussard earn Grid Stars top honor
CROWLEY – When the Notre Dame Pioneers needed it most, running backs Nick Gossen and Luke Broussard delivered.
The duo put the finishing touches on Notre Dame’s 21-6 District 4-3A victory over Crowley Friday evening, combining for 81 rushing yards on the Pios’ game-sealing drive that nearly ran off the final seven minutes of the clock.
Broussard ran five times and picked up 45 yards on the drive while Gossen logged 36 yards and capped the series with a 5-yard touchdown scamper.
Gossen racked up 155 yards and two touchdowns on the night while Broussard had 93 yards on 16 carries.
Their performance was enough to earn the duo a share of top honors on this week’s edition of Grid Stars.
Crowley High running back Davante Bourque also earned recognition after surpassing the 1,000 yard mark on the season, rushing for 117 yards and one touchdown in the loss. He also had two receptions for 30 yards and two kickoff returns for 44 yards.
Bourque now has 1,107 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns through eight games. He also has 13 receptions for 334 yards and two touchdowns.
Defensively, Zack Miller and Matt Venable had 13 and 12 tackles, respectively, for the Pios.
Crowley’s defensive charge was led by Brody Deshotel and Brennan Andrus. Deshotel had 12 solo tackles, seven assists and one sack while Andrus finished with 13 solo tackles and four assists. He also had one sack.
In other action, Church Point’s Jacob Boone, Rayne’s Jalen Williams and Iota’s Michael Thevis all turned in respectable performances.
Boone rushed for 73 yards and one touchdown and also hauled in two passes for 18 yards in Church Point’s 28-6 loss to Livonia while Williams netted 141 yards and one touchdown on 13 carries in Rayne’s 35-20 loss to Eunice. Thevis rushed for 59 yards on 27 carries in Iota’s 39-6 loss to Ville Platte.
