Notre Dame's Leonards earns All-American status
CROWLEY – Notre Dame standout Ryan Leonards has already earned every honor imaginable on the state level.
The Louisiana Lafayette signee was named the Player of the Year on the 5-3A All-District and All-Acadia Parish team as well as on the Louisiana Sports Writers and Louisiana Baseball Coaches Association All-State squads.
However, the biggest honor of them all came this weekend when he was named to the MaxPreps Small Schools All-American team, an accolade that even surprised him.
“I had no idea about that award,” said Leonards. “That’s just amazing. I don’t really know what to say.”
Leonards was one of 60 small school All-Americans chosen by the MaxPrep staff. The players were selected from schools across the nation with an enrollment of less than 1,000 students.
The honor capped a stellar prep career for Leonards, a two-sport athlete who helped lead Notre Dame to the Class AAA state title. During his senior campaign, the shortstop/pitcher hit .517 with 13 doubles, seven triples, eight home runs and 45 RBI. On the mound, he went 9-1 with a 1.59 ERA and posted 91 strikeouts in just over 65 innings.
