Notre Dame's Petitean shines at Nike Camp

BATON ROUGE – After helping lead Notre Dame to an undefeated season and the Class AAA state championship in football in 2009, junior Pete Petitjean moved on to baseball in January and has been force both offensively and defensively for the No. 2-ranked Pios on the diamond.

Last weekend, however, the 6-foot-1, 260-pound two-sport athlete returned to the gridiron to participate in LSU’s Nike Football Training Camp in Baton Rouge, joining 200 prospects from nine states, including California.

And just as Petitjean had done all football season long, he made his presence known at the camp.

The Rayne native was one of 25 players that made the cut for the third ESPN RISE All-Nike Camp Team of the Year.

The 25 players were selected based upon camp performance according to the NFTC staff and recruitability.

“Although he doesn’t have the ideal size that most Division I schools covet at center or guard, Petitjean performed well and demonstrated great footwork during drills,” noted one camp staffer. “He doesn’t have an offer but he should get some attention following his performance at the camp and his experience as a starter on last year’s state championship team.”

Petitjean, who was named to the All-District and All-Acadia Parish teams as a junior. He is the son of Rayne Mayor Jim and Lyn Petitjean.
