Notre Dame's Robichaux tosses no-hitter at Breaux Bridge; CHS Ladies top Beau Chene
BREAUX BRIDGE – The Notre Dame Pioneers, Class 3A defending state champions, kicked off their 2011 season with a six-inning, 12-0 victory at Breaux Bridge Thursday afternoon.
The Pios (1-0) took a 3-0 lead after five innings before exploding for nine runs in the sixth.
Returning All-Stater and UL-Lafayette signee Austin Robichaux was near perfect on the mound. The senior tossed a no-hitter while allowing just two walks and two hit batsmen.
Robichaux was also a force at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a double and a triple. He drove in one run.
Luke Bourgeois, Connor Goss and Nick Gossen also logged two hits each. All three Pios had one double and one RBI.
Paiton McBride followed with a single and two RBI while Mitch Corzine and Matt Venable each had one hit and a RBI.
The Pios will be in action again this afternoon when they take on Catholic High of New Iberia at 4 o’clock in the final game of the ND Pioneer Invitational at Miller Stadium.
In softball action, the Crowley Ladies improved to 2-0 on the season Thursday with a 5-4 victory over Class 4A Beau Chene.
Crowley took a 4-2 lead into the seventh inning before Beau Chene struck for two runs in the top of the frame to knot the score at 4-4.
The Ladies responded in the bottom half when Heather Trahan reached base on an infield hit. Then with two outs, Emily Boullion delivered the game winning hit, a double to center field that plated Trahan.
Olivia Boullion earned the victory in the circle, giving up four runs, three earned, on four hits and three walks. She struck out five in seven innings. She also hit an inside the park home run, her second in as many games.
Also contributing in the victory were Skylor Huval with a hit and two RBI, Maranda Guidry with a hit and one RBI and Jessica Powell with a double.
