October 23, 1916 - February 15, 2009

Funeral services were held for Shirley Frances Miller, 92, of Ville Platte, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ville Platte at 11 a.m., Wednesday, February 18. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

A loving mother and grandmother, Ms. Miller died at 9:35 a.m., Sunday, February 15, 2009, in Lafayette. She was a graduate of Ville Platte High School and then attended LSU. She received her teaching degree from Southwestern Louisiana Institute (now ULL) and started teaching at Bayou Chicot High School. Throughout her travels as the wife of an Army dental officer, she taught in American Dependent schools in England, Germany and Okinawa. While in New York, she taught at the Jewish Foundation School on Staten Island, New York. She also taught in Vernon Parish and retired from James Stephens Elementary School in Ville Platte. She was an avid golfer and gardener and she was certified by the Japanese Ikebana Society in floral arrangement. She served as president of the Ladies Auxillary at the Ville Platte Country Club, she was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (Opelousas Chapter) and she served as regent of the Cajunettes of Ville Platte. She was instrumental in the organization of the first Girl Scout Troop in Evangeline Parish. She married her husband of 60 years, Dr. Dayton Miller Jr. (Lt. Col Retired US Army) of Little Rock, Arkansas, November 16, 1935, in Athens, Georgia, while attending an LSU/Georgia football game.

Survivors include one son, Dayton Joseph Miller and his wife, Carmen E., of Houston, Texas; two daughters, Jane Olivia Miller of Youngsville and Sarah Arden Miller Loftin and her husband, Mark, of Oxford, Mississippi; three grandchildren, Dayton Justin Miller, Elizabeth Ann Miller and Margeaux Olivia Miller; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Dayton Miller Jr.; her parents, Dr. B.A. Soileau and Lena Roberts Soileau; two brothers, Dr. Gordon E. Soileau and John Soileau; one sister, Mrs. George Edward (Bargie) Bacquet Sr.; and one granddaughter, Stacey Arden Ackerman.

January 5, 1925 - February 13, 2009

MAMOU - Funeral services were held for Renolla Dupre, 84, of Mamou, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Mamou at 2 p.m., Monday, February 16. Burial followed in the New St. Ann’s Cemetery.

A native of Chataignier, Ms. Dupre died Friday, February 13, 2009, at the Courtyard Manor Nursing Home in Lafayette. She was a loving wife and mother. She was the original co-owner of Dups Suprette in Chataignier and a Eucharistic minister. Her gift of love and nurturing will be sadly missed by residents of Chataignier and Mamou.

Survivors include one son, Daily “Doc” Dupre Jr. of Lafayette; five daughters, Laura Rozas and her husband, Bruce, of Mamou, Jeanette Dupre of Lake Charles, Nancy Thompson and her husband, Landie, of Chataignier, Marsha Trahan and her husband, Lawrence, of Lafayette and Carolyn Allemand and her husband, Tim, of Prairie Rhonde; 18 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Angelina and Vidian Sensat; and her husband, Daily Dupre Sr.

August 19, 1941 - February 12, 2009

LEAGUE CITY, Texas - Funeral services were held for Robert Irving Penn, 67, of Houston, Texas, at Turning Point Church in League City, Texas, at 7 p.m., Tuesday, February 17, 2009.

Mr. Penn died Thursday, February 12, 2009. His joys in life were his family and friends. He loved his church, Turning Point Church of League City, Texas, and he was blessed by the fellowship of his church family. He suffered from a back injury for many years and from lung disease. Now he is free to dance before our Lord. How great is our God.

Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Patricia, of Houston, Texas; one son, Daniel Penn of Jennings; one sister, Mary (Suzi) Penn of Houston, Texas; and two brothers, Leroy Penn of Houston, Texas, and Richard Penn of Sulphur.

September 30, 1959 - February 16, 2009

Funeral services will be held for Jacqueline Jack, 49, of Ville Platte, at St. John Baptist Church in Ville Platte at 12 noon, Saturday, February 21. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Owens-Thomas Funeral Home of Ville Platte will be in charge of arrangements.
