January Obituaries 2006

Sam Hanna
Acclaimed as the Louisiana dean of political columnists and the publisher of three Louisiana newspapers himself, newsman Sam Hanna died Sunday in a Monroe hospital of complications from emphysema. He was 72.
For 50 years, the Winnsboro native covered everyone in politics from Earl Long to Kathleen Blanco, John Kennedy to George Bush. Hanna’s political column, “One Man’s Opinion,” was carried in papers statewide for four decades while he oversaw, wrote for and published The Concordia Sentinel in Ferriday and The Franklin Sun in Winnsboro. He bought the Sentinel in 1965 at age 33. In 1996, he bought The Ouachita Citizen from former West Monroe Mayor Bert Hatten.
Hanna graduated from LSU with a journalism degree in 1955, landing his first job writing sports and hunting stories for the Monroe Morning World and the News-Star World. Quickly, he made a name for himself for his adept coverage of the lawmaking process, making trips to Baton Rouge and Washington, capturing rare glimpses of the famous people.
Of President John Kennedy, Hanna once wrote:
“In 1958… He was boyish looking then, and I thought extremely shy for a man who was making plans then to run for President. Conversation wasn’t free with him, and he hedged when I asked him if he planned to campaign in Louisiana. Sen. Kennedy, thin and under-developed looking, wasn’t a picture of health. Three or four years later in New Orleans when I stood a Secret Service man apart from President Kennedy, I marveled at the change in him. He was heavier, robust and tanned.”
Of Earl Long, Hanna said in a 2005 interview:
“It was a wild place, the days of Uncle Earl. I had a lot of fun covering it. Earl Long was such a colorful figure with lots of loyal supporters and lots of loyal opposition.
I covered him when they sent him to the hospital in Galveston and I covered him when he came home to his ‘pea-patch farm’ in Winnfield. He had a heart for the underprivileged but eventually that heart gave out.”

Of Edwin Edwards, he told Edwards biographer, Leo Honeycutt:
“Edwards was always straight with me and I with him. If he said he supported a piece of legislation, he did exactly that, never vacillated. He told me one time newspapers and the press should have a standard of ethics just as the legal profession does and that we should police ourselves just as the legal profession does. I told him the First Amendment prevented that kind of control, the unfettered freedom of the press, but guaranteed him I’d always be objective and fair. He accepted that.”
The feeling was mutual. Former Governor Edwin Edwards this week recalled Hanna as a completely fair newsman, saying, “I admired and enjoyed his pragmatic view of political affairs and the need for a good, arm’s length relationship between the news media and political figures. As I grow older, I lose my contemporaries. He is one I’m truly going to miss.”
In Franklin, former Governor Mike Foster remembered Hanna’s journalistic integrity.
“He never surprised you and wrote something you didn’t say or took what you said out of context,” Foster remembered. “Sam also never put a headline on a story that was sensational or misleading. He would disagree with you but he was always straight up. I’m going to miss him and the state’s really going to miss him.”
“I admired Sam very much,” said former Governor David Treen. “He was a unique journalist, always fair, balanced, and introspective. Sam took great efforts to get all sides of a story He was a kind, cordial individual and I can’t say the press was always like that. Frankly, I’m heartbroken he’s gone.”
Former Secretary of State and Insurance Commissioner, Jim Brown, remained close to Hanna for 40 years.
“I told anybody who wanted to run for public office,” Brown said, “that when you went through Ferriday, you had better stop at the Concordia Sentinel and see Mr. Sam. He was more than an icon, he was an institution.”
Hanna didn’t consider the Mississippi River a barrier either, with much interest in Natchez politics, too.
“Sam asked me to speak to civic groups in Louisiana numerous times,” recalls former Natchez Mayor Tony Byrne. “He considered Concordia Parish-Adams County a hometown ‘area’ instead of two different states. He was always about progress together.”
Sam Hanna was a mentor to many journalists who were serious about objectivity. CNN’s Director of International News Planning and former news director at KNOE-TV in Monroe, Earl Casey recalls Hanna helping Casey’s high school newspaper keep a deadline.
“I first met Sam in that musky, decisive year of 1964 as LBJ took on Goldwater in the months following the Kennedy assassination when no one was sure of anything,” says Casey. “Mr. Hanna was extremely busy but he let us roll our high school paper from his presses at The Concordia Sentinel. Sam always kept that mischievous look in his eye that said, ‘We’re here to do good and we’ll give the rascals a run for it.’ His ethic set the course for my life.”
“Sam Hanna represented the vanishing breed of independent editor-publishers who formed the backbone of American journalism. He worked to keep locally owned newspapers viable and to serve his community while also writing insightful columns about state politics. He was a source of strength and enlightenment for his community and his state,” said journalist John Maginnis.
“Sam Hanna loved Louisiana politics, but not as much as he loved Louisiana. Sam was a legend who knew just about everybody in Louisiana politics and chronicled and celebrated our state’s political and public affairs for more than fifty years. He was always honest, direct and -- most of all -- deeply devoted to the well being of his beloved state,” said Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco.
Hanna is survived by his wife of nearly 46 years, Mary Sue, and his children, Mary Linda Rocconi, Lesley Hanna Capdepon and Sam Hanna Jr. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Ferriday at the First Baptist Church with interment at Old Winnsboro Cemetery in Winnsboro.
In eulogizing Sam Hanna, Earl Casey said Sam was the epitome of a quote Pope John Paul II said to newsmen: “If your reporting does not always command the attention you would desire, or if it does not always conclude with the success you would wish, do not grow discouraged. Be faithful to the truth and to its transmission, for truth endures, truth will not go away ... the service of humanity through the medium of truth is something worthy of your best years and your most dedicated efforts.”
Goodbye Sam. Your truth helped us all.
