Mildred Frankel Unverzagt passed away on Wednesday, July 5, 2006 on her 104th birthday. Ms. Unverzagt, born on July 5, 1902 was the fifth child born to Jac Frankel and Emma Loeb Frankel in Crowley, but only the third to survive. Her other surviving sisters, Jeanette Frankel Frank and Elise Frankel Fehlman both preceded her in death. Her father was one of the founding fathers of Crowley and was the first Postmaster of Crowley. He started the first department store in Crowley called the Crystal Palace which was located on Parkerson Avenue. Mildred grew up in Crowley and attended St. Michael’s School until she reached the fifth grade. Her father had decided that she should attend Crowley High so she transferred there and graduated. She went to Sophie Newcomb in New Orleans and she stayed there until she found out her mother was dying of Leukemia. She went home to Crowley and did not return to school. She met and dated John Venard Unverzagt for 13 years before they married on November 15, 1944. Mildred was very active in civic work and she chaired the St. Jude Drive for two years. She helped raise money for the new school at St. Michael’s. Ms. Unverzagt was on the board for the Acadia Parish Mental Health and was given an honorary lifetime membership and they presented her with a silver tray.Mildred decorated St. Michael’s Church for Christmas by furnishing Poinsettias for many years. She taught religion at St. Michael Catholic School. She gave scholarships to St. Michael and Notre Dame students in memory of her late husband, John V. Unverzagt for many years, and also raised money for the Notre Dame Chapel. She has worked with the Catholic Church and was a member of St. Michael’s Altar Society. Mildred became a Catholic shortly before they adopted their precious daughter, Penny. She always doted on children and desperately wanted a child of her own. After a long hard search, they finally chose the perfect child Penny Marie. Penny and her children became the center of her world and she stayed involved in every aspect of their lives. Mildred always enjoyed gardening and was a charter member of the first garden club in Crowley. Along with a friend, she designed the first garden club marker. Mimi, as she was affectionately called by everyone in her family, was a master seamstress and she created beautiful garments for every child in the family. She had many parties and her presentation of food was admired by all who attended. Mildred was a very witty person who wrote beautiful poetry as well as fun, witty verses. She was very active in the Crowley Little Theater and she designed and implemented many of the sets for the plays. She was truly a one-of-a-kind person. Mimi was smart, witty, quick minded, and extremely creative. She may have been 104 years old, but she was definitely a very young at heart person. Mildred made a tremendous impact on all of her family and friends.
She is survived by her daughter, Penny Stefanski and her husband Henry; her two granddaughters, Shannon and Shelley Stefanski; her nephew, Dr. Jack Russell Frank; her great-nieces, Nancy Hamic Cantey, Dianne Frank Robertson, Susan Frank Herrmann, Pamela Fehlman Kimbrough, Kathryn Fehlman Aderman and Debra Fehlman Hebert; her great nephew Stephen Hamic; and numerous great nieces and nephews throughout the United States.
