A native of Crowley and a resident of Lafayette, Mrs. Stelly first began
teaching in 1944. She taught four years at St. Michaels School
in Crowley and through the years taught thousands of children and adults
both in Crowley and Lafayette where she moved in 1961. She founded Kiddy
Korner Pre School and Learning Center, and wrote the book Phonics-The
Key to Reading and Spelling.
Mrs. Stelly worked with seven foreign oil executives teaching them to
spell, read and write English. She worked with a young blind student,
teaching her phonics before entering the school for the Blind.
She took a brain damaged child into her home to live, teaching her until
she was rehabilitated. Mrs. Stelly spoke to many religious groups, sharing
her marital experiences, her teaching career and about the cancer she
had at an earlier year nursing herself into remission.
Being a resident of Lady of the Oaks Retirement Manor, Mrs. Stelly volunteered
her time to many stroke patients, teaching them to speak again. She
was also instrumental in gathering clothes for the poor during her time
at The Oaks. She always lived by the philosophy, How
can I help someone today.
Mrs. Stelly was the 1966 Louisiana Business Woman of the Year, going
on to be named National Business Woman of the Year. She was honored
in the fourth Annual Bishops Charity Ball in 1991. She was a member
of the Lafayette Catholic Daughters, Daughters of the American Revolution,
United Daughters of the Confederacy and the National Society of the
Dames of the Court of Honor. She also helped to organize Lafayette's
Leur de Music Club. Mrs. Stelly was recently honored in Who's Who of
America and was interviewed by the Williams Center of Oral History at
L.S.U. about her life in Louisiana and the work she did in education
and phonics. Her book on phonics was donated to the Library of Congress
during the Clinton Administration to help with President Clintons
Illiteracy Program across the United States. When being interviewed
by the Louisiana Program for Illiteracy, Mrs. Stelly found the young
lady to be one of her past students.

her many friends of all ages, (too many to name but you know who you
are). Her riches were her Lord and her beloved family and friends, each
