Hillman Garrick
Sr.
IOTA Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 6, 2006 at
First Church of God in Christ in Crowley for Hillman Garrick Sr.,
75, who died Saturday, April 29, 2006 at Meadowbrook Rehabilitation
Hospital in Lafayette.
Rev. Alton Gatlin will officiate for the services. The family requests
visiting at Geesey-Ferguson Funeral Home in Iota Friday from 5 p.m.
to 10 p.m. and continue Saturday from 8 a.m. to service time at First
Church of God in Christ in Crowley.
Hillman Garrick Sr. was born on June 6, 1930 in Crowley. His parents,
Vincent and Doris Esther (Scott) Garrick welcomed Hillman into their
hearts and truly unique family. With twenty-one births that included
seven sets of twins, a set of triplets and four single births, Hillman
learned early on the meaning and significance of family love.
Hillman attended Ross Elementary School in Crowley and Phyllis Wheatley
High School in Houston. He explored Oklahoma City and Kansas City,
Mo. before establishing Chicago as his home for the majority of his
adult life. There, Hillman led a viable, productive and spirit-filled
life, loved his family, friends, neighbors, co-workers and various
organizations with which he belonged.
Through the years, a few of the organizations Hillman enjoyed were
the Travelers club (Bid Whist), Chatham-Avalon Park Community Council,
Southwestern Livestock Enterprise and the Atwood Acres Homeowners
Association.
For many years, Hillman worked as a foreman with Regency Thermographers
Printing Company. Deciding to keep his family stable, Hillman declined
an opportunity to relocate with the company and began a second career
in security. His talents and integrity were quickly noticed and Hillman
was promoted to lieutenant and supervisor with Kane Security Company.
He later opted to work full-time as a security officer at the LaSalle
National Bank. Hillman was also an entrepreneur, managing and owning
a dental office in Chicago (H and S Dental).
In 1998, Hillman fulfilled his dream of returning to the place of
his birth after retirement. He looked forward to spending his time
with his siblings and twin brother Hayman, connecting to the land
and animals. Always open to new experiences, Hillman and his wife,
Sarah opened a Cajun restaurant in Iota. The establishment was known
for its fine cooking and gentile hospitality that was a trademark
of Hillman.
Hillman was a man of few yet powerful words. He thought and felt deeply.
His love was unconditional as was his ability to express unconditional
acceptance. One would be challenged to find a topic or interest that
Hillman could not participate in or share some insight. He was a man
that loved learning; a thirst that was broad whether for practical
reasons or a hobby. Hillman enjoyed all spectator sports, music, travel,
gardening, working with wood and was very "handy". He could
take on the largest restoration projects and even repaired Renees
earrings. He learned to clip and groom the family pet "Fortune",
use technology ranging from cell phones to personal computers and
oh how he loved to drive! His humor and good-nature only competed
with that ever-famous smile.
Maintaining an open mind and heart, this gifted man served as a healer
to those whose spirit needed tending. His ability to touch the lives
in magnanimous ways is a testament to his greatness. Everyone loved
Hillman. What a remarkable distinction for one man to have the capacity
to bridge gulfs between young and elders; between those that appear
needy and those more fortunate; facilitating genuine kinship across
all ethnic descriptors. Hillman believed that everything starts in
the mind
what you believe you create. What a profound lesson
for each of us to embrace.
Hillman was an earth-angel, a gentle giant in consciousness and being
whose sojourn with us was far too short
or so we desire to believe.
He was not one to complain and was grateful for his personal connection
to God, his family and his many blessings in life.
Sarah, his wife, loved, admired, respected, cherished, and honored
Hillman as did his four children, Birdie Eakins and her husband Michael
of Huntington Beach, CA, E. Renee Garrick of Chicago, Ill.,
Denise E. Woodard of Las Vegas, and Hillman Garrick Jr. of Crowley;
four sisters, Kerry Barnum of Houston, Carolyn Jones of Oklahoma City,
Dorothy Melton of Palos Verde, Calif. and Audrey Bernard of Crowley;
three brothers, Bobby Garrett of Chicago, Carroll Garrick of Los Angeles,
Calif. and Gerald Garrick Sr. of Crowley; six grandchildren and five
great-grandchildren.
The love he felt for his wife, children, sisters, brothers, nieces,
nephews, cousins, and friends was returned and multiplied. Though
truly missed and a void has been created that will be impossible to
fill the same way, Hillmans memorable words and deeds will serve
as a healing balm for everyone.
The family requests any memorial contributions be sent to: The Leukemia
and Lymphoma Society, Louisiana Chapter, 3636 South I-10 Service Road,
Metairie, LA 70001, 1-888-290-0945.
