Beatrice Noel (Sylvester) Francis was born March 3, 1910 to the union of Arveline Noel and Adam Sylvester in Breaux Bridge. As is tradition in the Catholic faith, she was baptized April 30, 1910 and later made her First Holy Communion and Confirmation during her Christian journey.
As a child born to parents of meager resources, Beatrice worked in the fields along with her three brothers and one sister. In spite of the hardships, Beatrice was able to attend public school to receive an education. The opportunity to attend school for a basic education, although interrupted during the planting and harvest seasons, sustained her all her life and she was proud to have had the opportunity to learn.
As a young adult, Beatrice moved to Crowley where she met Joseph Francis. They were married December 8, 1934 at St. Theresa Catholic Church. Beatrice and Joseph owned and operated a community grocery store, a business that lasted fifty years. An independent and industrious woman, she often ran the store alone during his illness and following his death.
Beatrice was wheelchair bound for over eleven years, but she remained optimistic, joyful and full of life. She enjoyed every visitor; some who came daily and would sit and talk for hours. Her other enjoyments were watching television, reading the newspaper and sitting watching the goings on out of her “specially” installed glass front door. Beatrice was a vibrant, challenging spirit who will be missed by the many who knew and loved her.
She leaves to cherish her memory a granddaughter Edna Marie Williams (Laurence), great-granddaughter Debra Lewis, great-great granddaughter Lauren Lewis all of Los Angeles, Calif.; five nieces, Sr. Marie Antoinette Sylvester of New Orleans, Genevieve Matthews of Fort Worth, Tx., Veronica Honore (Mark), Marjorie John (Tarlton), Verna Mae Celestine (Alan) all of Breaux Bridge; six nephews, Harold Sylvester, Sr. (Velma), Roland Sylvester (Janice) of New Orleans, Anthony Sylvester (Clara), Ernest Francis, Harry Francis (Cora) all of Breaux Bridge, Paul Francis (Ethel) of Port Arthur, Tx.; step-daughters, Dorothy (Francis) Collins of Houston, Tx., Isabella (Francis) Anderson (pre-deceased) of Los Angeles, Calif.; faithful and dedicated cousin, John Ledet; loyal friends, Lois Dabb and Rita Martin and devoted religious friend, Sr. Mary Monica Archambault, all of Crowley.
