Peter
Vallot Jr.
LAFAYETTE Peter Vallot, Jr., Abbeville native and lifelong resident,
educator, civic leader and businessman, died at the age of 75, Tuesday,
Sept. 13, 2005 at Abbeville General Hospital, following a long battle
with Parkinsons Disease.
Peter is a descendant of the Vallot family of Vermilion Parish, who
settled there in the 1850s. He was born on May 20, 1930 to the late
Peter Vallot Sr. and the former Melder Taylor. He attended primary school
in Abbeville and high school in Houston. Peter earned a B.A. from Southern
University and a masters degree in education from the University
of Southwestern Louisiana. Peter served in the United States Air Force
for two years, stationed primarily in Germany.
Peter was an educator at the James Herod High School in Abbeville where,
for 10 years, he taught science and biology. During this time, Peter,
his father and brothers, also operated a sugar cane farm owned by his
family since the 1850s.
Driven by his commitment to racial equality and civil rights, Peter
devoted much of his life to public service. He pioneered the effort
to bring the Head Start Program to the Acadiana area and served as its
founding director. He also helped to establish the Southern Consumers
Cooperative, an organization designed to promote economic and social
development of African Americans.
In 1968, he became director of the Tri-Parish Community Action Agency,
which was established to provide educational and community service programs
in the area. He was a founding member of the Abbeville Water Board,
where he served as both president and vice-president during his ten
year tenure.
Driven by a strong entrepreneurial spirit, he founded several companies
over a span of 20 years. In 1970, he founded Am-Vak Corporation, which
provided oil field services to major oil companies in the Gulf Coast
area and constructed bridges and highways throughout the state. In 1976,
Peter and Am-Vak were featured in an article published in Black Enterprise
Magazine. Subsequently, he also founded Val-Tex Coatings, Inc., which
performed sandblasting and painting services in the offshore industry
in the Gulf. In 1977, he founded Odyssey Travels, Inc. and traveled
extensively throughout the world. He also owned and operated a family
restaurant and an adjacent Laundromat in Abbeville. He was voted Small
Businessman of the Year in 1987.
In 1972, Peter played a pivotal role as chief spokesman and negotiator
on behalf of the African American Community during the race riots at
Abbeville Senior High. He successfully negotiated a settlement with
the school board to institute instrumental changes, including proportionate
mandatory representation of African Americans in student groups and
activities at the school. In the aftermath of the riots, he worked to
ease tensions in the racially polarized community by promoting dialogue
between blacks and whites. In the same spirit, Peter encouraged his
own children to be among the first to challenge the systems separate
facilities for whites and blacks at Abbevilles public and social
establishments.
Peter was a long standing and active member of our Lady of Lourdes Catholic
Church Parish in Abbeville, where he played a leading role in parish
affairs. After fire destroyed Our Lady of Lourdes, he became a member
of St. Theresas Church where he remained a parishioner until the
end of his life.
Peter married Irene Porche of Lafayette in June of 1952 and seven children
were born of this union.
Peter was widowed in August, 1966 and later married Kathleen Kitty
Kern, a native of Napoleonville, who was his wife of 11 years.
