RAYNE - Eunice Arceneaux, 80, died Saturday,
January 29, 2000, at American Legion Hospital in Crowley. Funeral
services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, February 5, 2000, at Our
Mother of Mercy Church in Rayne. Burial was held in Our Mother
of Mercy Cemetery. Gossen Funeral Home of Rayne was in charge
of arrangements.
GUEYDAN- Ella Jane Badon, 62, of Gueydan died
Friday at her residence. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. today
at Matthews and Son Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in the
Gueydan Cemetery.
ANDRUS COVE - Mrs. Alma Broussard Benoit, 87,
of Baton Rouge, died at 5:15 p.m. Monday, February 21, 2000, at
Regency Place Care Center in Baton Rouge. Graveside services were
held at 11 a.m. today, February 23, at Andrus Cove Cemetery. Matthews
and Son Funeral Home of Lake Arthur was in charge of arrangements.
Melvin J. Baldy Breaux
GUEYDAN - Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Friday,
February 18, 2000, at St. Peters Catholic Church for Melvin
J. Baldy Breaux, 61, who died at 5:10 a.m. Thursday,
February 17, 2000, at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center.
Reverend Grady Estilette will officiate for the services. Burial
will be held in Gueydan Cemetery.
Visitation will be observed today until the time of services.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Deshotels of Gueydan; two sons,
Dennis W. Breaux and Melvin K. Breaux, both of Gueydan; two daughters,
Rhonda G. Hebert and Verna M. Breaux, both of Gueydan; a stepson,
Kevin James Deshotels of Lake Charles; four stepdaughters, Katrina
Deshotels of Lake Charles, Collettia Giroir of Westlake, Veronica
Martin of Lake Charles and Sue Augustine of Lake Charles; two
brothers, Gayle Breaux of Gueydan and Clarence Reff
Breaux of Des Allemands; three sisters, Alice E. Chesson of Vinton,
and Florence Latiolais and Shirley Duraso, both of Sulphur; six
grandchildren; one great-grandchild; six step-grandchildren and
one step great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lou Anna B. Breaux; his
parents, Clarence Breaux and the former Lydia Broussard; a brothers,
Terrance Breaux; and two sisters, Ella Mae Frederick and Jean
Vincent.
Mr. Breaux was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. He was a veteran
of the United States Marine Corps.

of Lawtell, died on Monday, February 21, 2000, in Opelousas General

LAFAYETTE - Ricky Lee Bourque, 17, died at 9:15
p.m. Saturday, February 26, 2000, in Lafayette. Funeral services

Freddie Boutte Jr.
A memorial Mass will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, February 12,
2000, at St. Theresa Catholic Church for Freddie Boutte Jr.. 49,
who died at Lafayette General Hospital on Saturday, February 5,
2000.

Survivors include his mother, Ethel Fuselier of Crowley; eight
siblings, Joyce S. Chapman, Jo Ann Boutte-Harmon and Ona J. Lavergne

California, Mary L. Morgan of Baton Rouge, Buster Livins of Jacksonville,
Arkansas, and Patrick Lavergne of Rayne; a host of nieces and
nephews, along with one aunt, Celeste Austin.
He was preceded in death by his father, Freddie Boutte Sr.

RAYNE - Mrs. Fannie J. Comeaux, 86, of Rayne
died Thursday at Rayne Guest Home. Funeral services were held
Saturday at 11 a.m. in St. Theresa Church in Duson with burial
in the Assumption Cemetery in Mire.
JENNINGS - Hazel Patin Coons, 84, died at 2:10
a.m. Tuesday, February 15, 2000, at Jennings American Legion Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, February 16,
2000, at Matthews and Son Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be
held in Greenwood Cemetery.
Vernice Dartez
Funeral services will be held Monday, February 28 at 10 a.m. in
St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church for Mrs. Vernice Dartez,
79, who died Saturday at American Legion Hopsital in Jennings.
Burial will be in Istre cemetery in Mermentau Cove. A rosary will
be recited tonight beginning at 7 p.m. in Duhon Funeral Home in
Crowley.
Visitation is from 10 a.m. today until 10 p.m. and again Monday
from 8 a.m. until the time of services.
Survivors include two sons, Lloyd and Jane Dartez of Jennings
and Nealie Dartez and Bobbie Martin of Dayton, Texas; two sisters,
Mrs. Kearney (Blanche) Weekley of Morse and Mrs. Ogden (Rena)
Breaux of Mermentau; two sister-in-laws, Mrs. Ambrose Richard
of Winnie, Texas and Mrs. Sylvia LeBlanc of Raceland; nine grandchildren
and 13 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Dartez was preceded in death by her husband, Blackie Dartez
and two brothers, Percy and Eugene LeBlanc.

7, 2000, at St. Joseph Catholic Church for Melvin Joseph Eudy,
46, who died at 9:49 p.m. at University Medical Center in Lafayette.
Father David Broussard will officiate for the services. Burial
will be held in St. Joseph Cemetery in Iota.
Visitation will be observed on Monday from 9 a.m. until the time
of services.
A rosary will be recited at 10 a.m. Monday, February 7, 2000.
Survivors include Helen Patin of Iota; one son, Michael J. Eudy
of Crowley; one brother, David Patin of Richard; and one sister,
Brenda Patin of Texas.
He was preceded in death by his adoptive parents, Aubrey and Cultry
Eudy.

at 5:15 a.m. on Saturday, February 12, 2000, at Oakwood Village
Nursing Home. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Monday, February
14, 2000, at Geesey-Ferguson Funeral Home Chapel in Crowley. Burial
was held in Hanks Cemetery in Morse.
Mervin Flash
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 1, 2000, at 1 p.m.
at St. Michael Catholic Church for Mervin Adam Flash, 80, who
died Monday, February 28, 2000, at 11:45 p.m. at Cornerstone Village
South.
Monsignor Charles Mallet will officiate for the services, Burial
will be in Woodlawn Mausoleum. A rosary will be recited Wednesday
at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. The visitation will be observed
Wednesday from 9 a.m. until service time.
Survivors include one daughter and her husband, Christine Flash
Scott and Terry Scott of Lafayette; one grandson, Luke Millam
of Lafayette; one brother, Milton Flash of Eunice.
Mrs. Flash was retired from Sun Oil Company as a gauger. He was
a member of the Knights of Columbus, Veterans of Foreign Wars
and American Legion.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Curtis L. Flash; one son,
Glenn Flash; one sister, Myrtle Sensat; and his parents, Alfred
and Ola Beard Flash.
Pallbearers will be Gene Flash, Kevin Flash, Dennis Sensat, David
Scott, Scott Sibley and Brian Sibley.

Christine Fontenot, 23, who died at 8:12 p.m. Sunday, January
30, 2000, in Duson.

Burial was held in Potter Field in Jennings.
Visitation was observed on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time
of services on Wednesday.
Survivors include her parents, Joseph and Lois Fontenot of Iota;

Annie Anna Mae Broussard Garrie
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. today, February 1, 2000,
at St. Michael Catholic Church for Annie Anna Mae
Broussard Garrie, 69, who died at 6:10 p.m. Sunday, January 30,
2000, at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Lafayette.
Father Louis Richard officiated for the services. Burial was held
in Abshire Cemetery in rural Kaplan.
Survivors include three sons, Robert Garrie of Chicago; Warren
and Darrell Garrie, both of Crowley; three daughters, Linda Garrie,
Debra Garrie and Kay LeBlanc, all of Crowley; one brother, Nelson
Broussard of Crowley; and three sisters, Clara Miller, Hazel Bourque
and Peggy Pryor, all of Crowley.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Mabel Broussard; her
husband, Willie Garrie; her parents, Advey and Effie Broussard.

Mrs. Gladys R. Gautreaux
LAKE CHARLES - Funeral services for Mrs. Gladys R. Gautreaux,
80, of Lake Charles were held on Monday, February 28, 2000, at
1 p.m. in Johnson Funeral Home Chapel. The Reverend Aubrey Guilbeau
officiated.
Burial was held in Consolata Cemetery under the direction of Johnson
Funeral Home.
Mrs. Gautreaux died on Saturday, February 26, 2000, at 10:30 p.m.
at a local hospital.
A native of Scott, Mrs. Gautreaux was a graduate of Spencer Business
College in Lafayette. She had lived in Crowley for several years,
and had lived in Lake Charles for 33 years. Mrs. Gautreaux was
a member of American Legion Post #1 Ladies Auxiliary and was a
member of St. Margaret Catholic Church.
She is survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, February 16,
2000, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church for Anthony
Blanc Guidry, 84, who died at 7:05 p.m. Monday, February
14, 2000, at American Legion Hospital in Jennings.
Father Joseph Greenwell officiated for the services. Burial was
held in Woodlawn Cemetery.
Survivors include Marie Babineaux of Jennings; three great-nieces;
one great-nephew; and three great-great nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Marie and Marcel Guidry;
and one son, Ronald Guidry.

Funeral services will be held Monday, February 28, 2000 at St.
Michael Catholic Church at 2 p.m. for Anna C. Habetz, 92, who
died at 2:39 p.m. February 25 at Bayou Village Nursing Home.
Burial will be in the St. Leo IV Catholic Church Cemetery, Roberts
Cove, Rev. Francis Bourgeois will officiate at graveside services.
Officiating for the services as Presider-Msgr. Charles Dubois,
Homeliest, Msgr. Charles Mallet, readers of scripture, Fr. Louie
Richard and Msgr. Paul Metrejean. Presentation of gifts, daughters
Agnes Jones, JoAnn Ledoux, Clementine Kirsch, and her 38 grandchildren
brought forward the flowers. Altar-server Eric Ledoux, grandson.
Visitation will be at Geesey-Ferguson Funeral Home today from
8 a.m. until 10 p.m. and Monday from 7:30 a.m. until the time
of services.
She is survived by five sons, Lawrence and wife, Marie of Roberts
Cove; Leonard and wife, Deanna; Robert and wife Pat of Crowley;
Bernard and Patricia of Iowa, Albert and wife Brenda of Lafayette;
three daughters, Clementine Kirsch and husband Huey, Agnes Jones
and husband Michael of Crowley and JoAnn Ledoux and husband Fredrick
of Iota.
Two brothers, William J. and Norbert Cramer of Crowley and two
sisters, Lucy Zaunbrecher and Helen Cramer survive her.
She is also survived by 38 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren,
two deceased and one great-great grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John B. and Anna Vondenstein
Cramer of Mowata, her husband, H. Joseph Habetz of Crowley, her
daughter, Bernadine Habetz, her brothers, John H. Cramer and Bernard
Cramer, sister, Josephine Zaunbrecher, Leona Habetz and Sr. Mary
Lucie Cramer, CDP.
She was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church and the St. Michael
Ladies Altar Society.
Mrs. Habetz is remembered for her beautiful crochet pieces, which
she crocheted and gave to the Catholic schools and churches for
fundraising events.
Pallbearers include Brian Lawrence Habetz, Ronald Leonard Habetz,
Patrick Joseph Kirsch, Christopher Joseph Habetz, Chad Joseph
Habetz, Jude Joseph Ledoux, Brady Michael Jones, grandsons and
James Winston, grandson-in-law.

Father Donald Hebert
Funeral arrangements are pending at Gossen Funeral Home in Rayne
for Father Donald Hebert, 57, pastor of Assumption of The Blessed
Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Mire, who died on Tuesday, Feb.
22,2000, at the church rectory.
Father Hebert was born April 8, 1942, in Lafayette to the late
Louis Hebert and Leader Marie Mire Duhon.
He was ordained to the priesthood on June 1, 1968. His first assignment
was to St. Francis Regis in Arnaudville. He also served in Eunice,
Cecelia, and Ville Platte. He was named pastor of Assumption in
1989.
He was well-known for his geneological studies and compilation
of civil and sacramental records of the Diocese of Lafayette.
In 1999, he authored The Gentle Shepherd, a biography of the late
Bishop Jules Jeanmard.
Desiree Desi L. Schambough Istre
LAFAYETTE - Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 1 at
a 2 p.m. Mass of Christian burial in La Chapelle de Martin &
Castille for Desiree Desi L. Schambough Istre, 37,
who died Sunday February 27, 2000, at Abrom Kaplan Memorial Hospital
in Kaplan.
Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.
The Rev. Keith DeRouen, pastor, Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist,
will be the celebrant of the funeral Mass and will conduct the
services. Valerie Andrus, organist, will sing for the services,

Survivors include her husband, A.J. Istre of Kaplan; one daughter,

Aaron Brook Istre and his wife, Michelle and Alex Shea Istre,
all of Kaplan; her father, Roger E. Schambough of Lafayette; and
two brothers, Douglas Kirk Schambough and his wife, JoAnn of Carencro
and John Daurell Schambough and his wife, Michele, of Youngsville.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Shirley Gabriel Schambough;
and one brother, Justin Corey Schambough.
A native of Eunice and resident of Lafayette for 26 years, Desiree
had been a resident of Kaplan for 11 years.
She was a 1980 graduate of Teurlings High School and was employed
by Rental City of Rayne for the past five years.
A rosary will be prayed Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the funeral home.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed from 10 a.m.
until 10 p.m. Tuesday and from 8 a.m. until the time of services
on Wednesday.

Percy P. Jeffers
BRANCH - Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 24,
2000, at 2 p.m. at Branch Methodist Church for Percy P. Jeffers,
89, who died Monday, February 21, 2000, at Our Lady of Lourdes
Hospital in Lafayette.
Survivors include his wife, Gladys Hayes Jeffers of Branch; three
sons, Boyd Jeffers of Baton Rouge, Lloyd Jeffers of Rayne and
Frank Jeffers of Branch; three daughters, Hazel Courts of Vidor,
Texas; Ouida Merritt of Many and Carlis Cummings of Colorado Springs,
Colorado; one sister, Hattie Wyatt of Branch; 17 grandchildren
and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Lillie Mae
Brown Jeffers; five brothers, Curley, Willie, Robert, Leslie and
Enos Jeffers; and one sister, Ina Fusilier.
Mr. Jeffers was a past principal of Branch Elementary School serving
there for 35 years. He was also a member of the Retired Teachers
Association, the Woodman of the World, and also a member of the
Masonic Lodge #313.
Visitation will be observed on Wednesday from1:30 p.m. until 10
p.m. and on Thursday from 8 a.m. until the time of services.

Lagrange, 33, who died at 1:30 p.m. Monday, January 31, 2000,
at American Legion Hospital in Crowley.

Visitation will be observed on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until 10
p.m. and on Thursday from 8 a.m. until the time of services.
A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
Survivors include her husband, Hugh Lagrange of Crowley; three
daughters, Kristin, Andrea and Lisa Lagrange, all of Crowley;
her parents, Elaine and Byron Olivier of Crowley; three brothers,
Keith, Brandon and Tyler Olivier, all of Crowley; and her grandmother,
Anna Vincent of Morse.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Alton Vincent,
and Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Olivier.
Mrs. Lagrange was an organ donor. She donated both of her eyes,
so that someone would have the gift of sight.

at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church for J.B. Matte, 68,
who died at his residence at 1:30 a.m. Sunday, February 13, 2000.

Mrs. McGinn was a graduate of S.L.I., now University of Louisiana
at Lafayette. She was a member of the St. Michaels Catholic
Church, St. Michael Prayer Group, Crowley Womens Club and
the Catholic Daughters. She taught at St. Michael Catholic School
for seven years and 21 years at Crowley Jr. High as a social studies
and reading specialist before her retirement.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ferdinand and Eula Luckett
Fontenot; her husband, Wallace McGinn and one son, F.M. Ferdie
McGinn, Sr.

LAKE CHARLES - Funeral services for Mrs. Fannie Irene McManus,
84, of Lake Charles, will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, February

Mrs. McManus died at 10:11 p.m. Sunday, January 30, 2000, at a
local hospital.
She was a native of Oakdale, La. and lived in Lake Charles since
1955. She was a longtime member of University Methodist Church.
Mrs. McManus was a member of the Eastern Star Grand Chapter #164
and past Worthy Matron.
Survivors include two sons, Robert L. McManus of Iota and Morris
Troy McManus of Williston, N.D.; two daughters, Cathy Derfield
of Moss Bluff and Martha Comeaux of Iowa; eight grandchildren;
12 great-grandchildren; one brother, Clive Leggett of Ville Platte;
and one sister, Bessie Lee Walden of Kirbyville, Texas.

Mrs. Meaux was a native of Lafayette, the daughter of the late

of Mary Catholic Church. He served on the Parish Council of Immaculate
Heart of Mary as treasurer and was also a member of the Redemptorist
Catholic School Board. Mr. Richard was leader of the Come Lord
Jesus Bible Study Group for 25 years. He was a member of the block
rosary in South Crowley and the Immaculate Heart of Mary Altar
Society. He was a member of the Rice Council, Cattleman Association
and Good Sam Club.

Shreve, 56, who died at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, February 5, 2000,
at American Legion Hospital in Crowley.

Survivors include his wife, Thelma Shreve of Crowley; one son,

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lou Ella and Earl Shreve;
two brothers, Harry and Eddie Shreve; and two sisters, Lola Bird
and Myrtle Richard.
Mr. Shreve served in the U.S. Navy during the Cold War in 1961
to 1963 on Observation Island. He was a member of Parkerson Avenue
Baptist Church in Crowley. He retired from Grey Wolf Drilling
after 27 years of service.

Allison Smith, Thomas R. Smith IV, Michelle Ducote, Charlotte
Smith and Michael Smith; and four great grandchildren, Nick, Alex,
Ashley and Lauren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two
brothers, Thomas R. Smith Jr. and Jack Smith; and one sister,
Linda Lee Bonnet.
A native of Crowley and a resident of Lafayette for 43 years,
Mr. Smith was the son of the late Thomas Smith, a native of Caldwell
Parish and the former Linda Hill, a native of Patterson.
He was a veteran of military service having served in the National
Guard.
Mr. Smith was a member of the St. Leo the Great Catholic Community
where he served as a trustee, lector and Eucharistic minister.
He was a member of the IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical
Workers) and was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council
#5345.
A rosary will be prayed Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the funeral home.

time she served as secretary to the mayor. She will always be
remembered for her love of playing cards and bingo. She was loved

A native of Mowata and a resident of Duson since 1981, Ethel Miller
Trumps, 72, passed away at 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 15 at Our
Lady of Lourdes Medical Center. She donated her body to the LSU
School of Medicine. She was the daughter of the late Maurice and
Eunice Miller of Mowata.
Mrs. Trumps was a former cosmetologist and retired bookkeeper.
She was a member of St. Jules Catholic Community, and altar society
member of St. Theresa Catholic Church of Duson and a 50-year member
of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court of Iota. She loved
sewing, crocheting, reading and traveling.
Mrs. Trumps is survived by her husband of 55 years, Casper H.
Trumps of Duson; one son, Renae Trumps and his wife, Sandra of
Rayne; two daughters, Mary Dugas and her husband, Caffery of Lafayette,
and Edith Swiney and her husband, Jeffery Bo of Slidell;
one sister, Lorraine Vondenstein and her husband, John of Duson;
and eight grandchildren, Jonathan, Justin and Jennifer Trumps,
Maureen, C.J. and Molli Dugas, and Jayla and Jessica Swiney.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Lois
Richard of Iota.
The family asks that any donations be made to the American Heart
Association.
