Rev.
Rogers Cain
I have fought a good life. I have finished my course. I have kept
the faith; henceforth, there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness,
which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give at that day. II
Timothy 4: 7-8
LAKE CHARLES -- The Chief Shepherd of his fold has laid down his staff
and has pilgrimed beyond the reach of mortal man. On Saturday, Nov.
16, as he beheld the light that beckoned him from that yonder distant
shore, The Most Reverend Rogers Cain answered the call.
Rev. Cain was born Aug. 29, 1929 to the union of the late Moses and
Rosella Cain in Sunset. As a child he was taught divine precepts and
given spiritual guidance by his parents. He met Thelma Matthews, who
later became his wife on Sept. 18, 1948 and mother of their children,
Linda C. Badon and Charles E. Cain. They resided in Crowley for 44 years
and moved to Lake Charles in 1991.
The Godly principals instilled in this servant led him to commit his
life to Christ as a young man. He was a member of the First Church of
God in Christ in Crowley. He worked diligently as a young man under
the pastorate of Elder Leroy Winbush, and later under the pastorate
of Bishop Roy L.H. Winbush. He served faithfully as a deacon, Sunday
School Superintendent, teacher for the Young People Willing Workers,
officer of finance and chairman of the Deacon Board.
In the seventies, Rev. Cain acknowledged his call to the Gospel Ministry
and later was ordained an elder in 1979 by Bishop J.W. White. A year
later, he received his first charge as pastor of the Philadelphia Church
of God in Christ in Mossville. In 1987 he was assigned as pastor of
the Freeman Memorial Church of God in Christ in Lake Charles. Through
the years, God has blessed his servant mightily, as well as the ministries
under his leadership. Both congregations have grown, churches were renovated,
and additional properties secured.
Because of his faithfulness, leadership abilities, and love for God
and his people, he was consecrated to the position of Superintendent
of the Lake Charles District of the Church of God in Christ in 1990.
In addition to these duties, Rev. Cain served as Sunday School Superintendent
of the Lafayette District and served as Treasurer for the First Jurisdiction
of Western Louisiana and a member of the Credit Union Board for the
First Jurisdiction.
His concern for Gods churches went beyond Philadelphia and Freeman
COGIC, therefore he affiliated himself with the Interdenominational
Ministerial General Alliance. He has been an active member since May
of 1998 and served as president for four years.
Honors and awards presented to Supt. Cain were numerous. Among those
received were an honorary State Senator on July 6, 1978 by the Louisiana
Senate Chamber Baton Rouge and an honorary Doctorate Degree on June
21, 2002 from The Lords Outreach School of Theology of Lake Charles.
In 1956, Rev. Cain started his first business, Cains Slaughter
House, in Crowley. After 15 years, he opened a second business, Cains
Meat Market. Supt. Cain was well known for his famous meat specialities,
which he shipped nationwide. After 35 years in business, he retired
and dedicated his time to the ministry.
Other involvements include a tenure of approximately 10 years as a member
of the Selective Induction Board for the United State Military in Crowley.
He also served as a member of the Acadia Parish Juror Selection Pool
for approximately 15 years. For many years, he was a member of the Crowley
Chamber of Commerce. His interest in his community was demonstrated
by his active involvement in various community and civic events in Crowley,
Lake Charles and Mossville.
He leaves to celebrated his life and cherish his memory his loving and
devoted wife of 54 years, Thelma M. Cain; his daughter, Linda C. Badon
and her husband Ronnell B. Badon of Lafayette; his son, Charles E. Cain
and his wife Linda H. Cain of Crowley five grandchildren, Timica
C. Ceasar (Darrell), Robin B. Brookter (Bryant), Nicole Cain, Jennifer
Badon and Cornelius Rogers Cain; five great grandchildren, Jeremi Brookter,

brothers, Odes Cain Senior (Mary Ann) of Houston, Moses Cain Senior

and Rosa Mae Williams of Houston and Beatrice Savoy (Joseph) of Crowley;
his Godchildren, Dorothy McClain of Houston, Magellan Deville of Sunset
and Donnie Williams of Lake Charles; cherished nieces, nephews, cousins
and friends.
Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. with a Memorial Service beginning at
7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 21 at Philadelphia Church of God in Christ
in Mossville. Funeral Services will be at noon on Friday, Nov. 22, at
