Dorothy Jean Eggleston Merritt
Dorothy Jean Eggleston Merritt was born Jan. 7, 1927, to Arthur William Eggleston and Bennie Lee Williams Eggleston, in Yoakum, Texas. She went home to The Lord, Saturday, May 10, 2014, at the age of 87.
Dorothy was a bookkeeper for her father’s oil business for 30 years. She had a passion for planting and growing flowers, enjoyed entertaining and was a friend to many. She married Burton Fred Merritt Jr. in Crowley on Aug. 19, 1950. They were married for 62 years, until Burton’s death on June 5, 2013.
Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Lee Ellen Merritt Speckman and husband Luke of New Braunfels, Texas; one son, Mark Allen Merritt of Gonzales, Texas; one sister, Marjorie Lee Eggleston Edwards, of Waco, Texas, and her brother-in-law, Edward Allen Merritt and wife Barbara of Texarkana, Texas. She is also survived by three grandchildren; Burton Speckman and wife Kimberly of Caldwell, Texas, Katie Speckman Cobbs and husband Bruce of Round Rock, Texas, Benjamin Merritt Speckman of College Station, Texas; three great-grandchildren, Hallie Norah Cobbs, Mason Luke Cobbs and Charlie Ann Speckman, three nephews and a niece.
Graveside services, led by Brother Butch Ikels of The Country Church of Marion, Texas, were held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, May 13, 2014, at Pilot Grove Cemetery, Yoakum, Texas.
