Left to cherish his memory are his children, Nicole Bouligny Brown, Francesca Bouligny Orgeron, Joseph Daniel Bouligny Jr. and wife Julie Brents Bouligny, all of Lafayette; one beloved sister, Wanda Bouligny Luquette and husband Irby; sisters-in-law, Shelby Dischler Orear (and Bob) and Priscilla Dischler Gotreaux (and Gary); one brother-in-law, Douglas Dischler (and Kathy); and his grandchildren, W. Lenox Brown IV, Madeline Ledet Brown, Alexandra Ann Hay, Joseph Daniel Bouligny III, Brenlyn Kay Bouligny and Sophia Brents Bouligny. He was preceded in death by his devoted and loving wife of 55 years, Jacqueline Madeline Dischler Bouligny; parents, Frank and Blondine Ledet Bouligny; and son-in-law, Philip Jude Orgeron.
A graduate of Abbeville High School, Dan also served in the U.S. Army before opening Bouligny Interiors in 1960. For over 50 years, he grew his business to national prominence and reputation in design, alongside his wife and business partner, Jackie, until their retirement in 2012. Dan was a fellow of the American Society of Interior Designers, the International Interior Design Association, and an industry leader in developing licensing for Interior Designers in the State of Louisiana, ultimately being awarded its first Louisiana license.
Active in his Catholic faith, Dan was a member of Saint Mary’s Catholic Church, serving as a Eucharistic Minister and a Knight of Magistral Grace in The Order of Malta, the oldest lay religious order in the Catholic Church. Dan was instrumental in forming the Lafayette Region of the Federal Association of the Order of Malta, serving as its first Hospitaller. Drawn to the Order of Malta’s dual charisms to defend the faith and provide service to the poor and sick, he often escorted the sick on a pilgrimage to the Our Lady of Lourdes shrine in Lourdes, France.
Dan was instrumental in founding Hospice of Acadiana, serving on its Board for over 25 years in various capacities, including President, 2nd Vice President, Membership Chairman and Facilities Chairman, as well as a founding member of the Bank of Lafayette. His love of Mardi Gras was renowned, serving as President of the Southwest Louisiana Mardi Gras Association, Commodore of the Krewe of Gabriel and reigning as King Gabriel XXXVII in 1976. Besides their children and grandchildren, he and Jackie truly enjoyed their Supper Club, begun in the early 1960s, and the hospitality and close friendships it fostered for over half a century.
