Josie Elaine Petitjean Cook


RAYNE—A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, December, 28, 2013, at 10:00 a.m. for Josie Petitjean Cook, 91, of Rayne, LA, who passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 25, 2013, at the Rayne Guest Home. The Mass will take place at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rayne with Fr. Joe Breaux officiating.
Interment will take place at St. Joseph Cemetery #2, Mausoleum.
Josie Elaine Petitjean Cook was born on September 3, 1922, in Rayne. She graduated from Rayne High School and attended Southwestern Louisiana Institute (now ULL). Josie married Lewis Joseph Cook, Sr., of Kinder, LA, in August of 1948, and they spent the rest of their lives in Rayne raising six children. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America. Josie’s life can best be characterized by her deep faith in God, her unconditional love for her family, and her remarkable and heart-warming joie de vivre.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis, and by her parents, May Prejean Petitjean and Joseph Dave Petitjean, Sr. She was also preceded by her two brothers, Tommy Petitjean and Dave Petitjean, Jr; a sisters-in-law, Idel Cook and Georgia Cook; a brothers-in-law, Fred Cook and Frank Bailey; and her godchild, Dr. Thomas Petitjean.
Josie leaves a legacy of faith and love through her large and still-growing family. Lewis and she raised three daughters and three sons: Josette Cook Surratt and her three daughters, Katherine Surratt Movassaghi, Elizabeth Surratt Snyder, and Rebecca Surratt Hetherwick; Lewis Cook, Jr., (Faye) and their three sons Lewis Cook III, Jeff, and Stuart Cook; Dave Cook (Shirley) and their three children, Adrienne Cook Clement, Dr. Lori Cook, and Brad Cook; Cecile Cook Mouton (Marc) and their two sons, Ben and Jacob Mouton; Robert Cook (Karon) and their three daughters, Mary Katherine Cook Broussard, Rosemary and Mayme Cook; and Catherine Cook Hundley (Jimbo) and their four children, Margaret, Annie, Leah, and Patrick Hundley. She is also survived by three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Evelyn Petitjean of Rayne, Mrs. Audrey Petitjean of Crowley, Mrs. Georgette Bailey of Kinder, and numerous nieces and nephews. Eighteen grandchildren, ranging in age from 41 to 16, and ten great-grandchildren (with another due in February) will forever remember “Grandma” and her special sayings, devotion, and sense of humor that brought laughter to everyone.
Pallbearers will be her seven grandsons: Lewis Cook III, Jeff and Stuart Cook, Brad Cook, Ben and Jacob Mouton, and Patrick Hundley.
Josie’s family wishes to thank the staff of the Rayne Guest Home, Dr. Tommy Curtis, and her devoted caregiver, Evelyn Young, for their love, compassion, and attention to Josie during her illness.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Gossen Funeral Home, Rayne, LA, on Friday, December 27, from 3 p.m.-8 p.m. with a rosary at 6 p.m. Visitation will continue Saturday morning from 8:00 until time of the service. Gossen Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
