Margie passed away on Sunday, June 22, 2014 in a Wasilla, AK hospital.

Born in Germany on March 5, 1960, Margie moved with her family to Lafayette, LA as a child.  She attended schools there, graduating from Acadiana High School in 1978.  She attended Indian Bayou United Methodist Church until relocating to Alaska in 1979.

Margie worked at Matanuska Telephone Association (MTA) from 1985 until 2012, holding many positions, including Plant Clerk, Service Representative, Public Relations Specialist, Directory Assistant, and Executive Assistant.  She was known as a creative genius at MTA for using her fun-loving, enthusiastic, can-do attitude to change how MTA reached out to the community.  Margie didn’t just participate in the community parades—she was the parade.  With her legendary “Pink Ladies” MTA dance team, which she choreographed herself, she added enthusiasm and flare to each event.  Her co-workers said that Margie would work tirelessly for their community-sponsored events, and that she never asked for anything in return.  She will always be remembered for her wonderful sense of humor and infectious smile.

Margie thoroughly enjoyed her involvement in numerous organizations, including the Alzheimer’s Association, United Way Mat-Su, Valley Woman’s Resource Center, and Toys for Tots.

Margie enjoyed several hobbies, including crafts, sewing, dancing, and quail hunting.  She was well-known for her cooking abilities.  Margie loved people and people loved her.  She touched lives everywhere she went, and she will be greatly missed.  Margie and her husband, Michael, met in Wasilla and were married for 33 years.

In addition to her husband, Margie is survived by her daughter, Megan Michaelson and husband, Scott of Palmer, AK; son, Micah Gabrielle of Wasilla, AK; mother, Margie DuBose Garrett of Lafayette; sister, Darlene Powell and husband, Bobby of Indian Bayou; brothers, Marvin Garrett and wife, Becky of Richardson, TX, Ronnie Garrett and wife, Kelly of Lafayette, and Danny Garrett and wife, Dana of Lafayette; and grandchild, Avery Michaelson of Palmer, AK.  She is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Preceding Margie in death was her father, Ronald Anton Garrett.

Serving as pallbearers are Bobby Powell, Bobby Layne Powell, Ryan Powell, Brian Garrett, Kirby Garrett, and Jeff Sloane.

The family welcomes floral tributes, and has also asked that memorial donations be made in Margie’s name to United Way Mat-Su, PO Box 872485, Wasilla, AK 99687.
