Oilers top Pios in Junior American Legion contest

CROWLEY – The Eunice Oilers broke open a close game in the final two innings, scoring nine runs in the fifth and six to cruise to an 11-1 Junior American Legion victory over the Notre Dame Pioneers at Miller Stadium Wednesday.

The Oilers led 2-1 heading into the fifth inning when the wheels fell off for the Pios.

Back-to-back infield singles by Josh Patin and Martin Seemion was followed by an error by the Pios’ second baseman on a possible double-play ball. Patin scored on the miscue and Seemion moved up to third base. Trent Vidrine then singled to left to plate Seemion and chase ND pitcher Nick Gossen from the mound.

Robert Walton took the mound in relief of Gossen and induced a grounder to shortstop by Brett Darbonne. However, the Pios were unable to make a play. One out later, Matthew Bari doubled to left field to plate two more runs, putting the Oilers up 7-1.

Notre Dame’s Blake Miller started the bottom of the frame with a bunt single but was thrown out attempting to steal two pitches later. A strikeout and a ground out ended the inning.

The Oilers added to their advantage in the bottom top of the sixth when Seemion doubled and scored on a double by Brodie Olivier. Vidrine and Bari each drove in a run and another run crossed the plate on a error before the Pios were able to record the final out.

Eunice’s Zac Person took the mound in the bottom of the sixth and closed out the game by striking out the side.

Notre Dame’s lone run crossed the plate in the bottom of the first inning when Andre Thibodeaux was hit by a pitch and eventually scored on Charlie Mayeaux’s single to left field.

In the following three innings, Notre Dame stranded three runners in scoring position, two at third base.

Eunice scored its first run in the top of the first inning when Olivier singled and scored on a double by Vidrine.

The Oilers took the lead for good in the second frame when Kourt Deshotel singled to right and scored on a bases-loaded walk to Patin.

Darbonne logged the victory for the Oilers, giving up one run on four hits and two walks in five innings. He struck out four.

Gossen suffered the loss for the Pios, allowing six runs on eight hits and two walks in four innings of work.

Bari and Vidrine paced Eunice’s offense with three hits each. Bari doubled twice and drove in three runs while Vidrine had one double and three RBI.

Oliver and Seemion each had two hits, including one double while Person, Deshotel, Darbonne and Patin each had one single.

Mayeaux, Miller, Jory Daigle and Matt Reed each singled for the Pios.
