One killed in Sunday shooting; worker describes scene
BRANCH - A Eunice man died and two others were injured from gunshot wounds following a disturbance at a Chevron Station in Branch Sunday night.
The store is located on the 7000 block of the Church Point Highway.
Kamruz Zaman, who was working at the store at the time of the shooting, said that he knew there was a crowd outside and suddenly he heard screaming and shooting.
“One of the men who had been shot here (he pointed towards his shoulder area) came running into the store and went into the back,” said Zaman. “He was bleeding bad. When he heard the police coming he ran back outside.”
That’s when store workers locked the doors.
All three victims were transported by Acadian Ambulance to area hospitals with gunshot wounds. One of the victims, now identified as D’Andre Goodley, 18, of Hwy 190 Eunice, was pronounced dead at Acadia/St. Landry Hospital. It is unknown whether Goodley was the man Zamar was referring to as having run into the store.
While he was being interviewed Monday, Zamar spotted a crack in the glass of the store’s front door that he hadn’t noticed before. As he examined the crack, he asked if it looked like it may have come from a bullet fragment or possibly some concrete that was hit by a bullet.
Acadia Parish Sheriff Wayne Melancon advised that deputies and investigators worked through the night interviewing witnesses, trying to determine the reason for the altercation and trying to identify those responsible for the shooting.
“People used to move to the country to get away from scenes such as this,” said another man who wished to remain unidentified. “I don’t think any place is safe these days.”
As investigators continue, Sheriff Melancon is asking anyone with information to contact his office at 788-8700.
