Ousse honored at monthly DAR meeting

On April 14, 2011 the Acadia Chapter of DAR met at the home of Elaine Simon. Preceding the program, a memorial ceremony was conducted by chaplain Elaine Simon, regent Joan Hernandez and vice-regent Joanna Pruitt to honor the memory of recently deceased member, Julie Ousse. In her personal tribute to Julie, Joanna asked Julie’s children including her son,“Butch” Ousse; goddaughter, Sheila Faulk; her daughter, Julie Anna Ousse Manale, to share some of their memories of Julie Ousse. The family also pointed out that their father, Edwin Ousse, now also deceased, had been the registrar of voters for Acadia Parish for many years. At the conclusion of the ceremony, Elaine read a touching poem by Helen Rice. Joanna accompanied on the piano for the group’s singing of “Amazing Grace.”

The meeting continued with the traditional opening ritual and a business session. In her report, conservation chairperson, Camille Reed, presented numerous ways members can aid in the cause of conservation, such as collecting cans, plastic and donating coupons to schools.

National defense chairperson, Elaine Simon, reported that she has contacted 13 schools for the presentation of Good Citizen awards to eighth-grade students. The group also voted to add the eighth grade at Branch Elementary to the list for next year. Joanne Arnaud announced the winner of the high school Good Citizen essay contest. Chapter and District 6 winner is Kelsey Douguet, who attends Iota High School.

The program was followed by a show-and-tell of personal antique memorabilia. Most of the items were inherited from family members and came with very interesting stories. Elaine showed two little toy pianos she had as a young child which sparked her interest in music.

Chaplain Elaine Simon closed with the benediction, which was the reading of the prayer published for the national day of prayer.

Punch, coconut cake, chocolate cake, coffee and Easter chocolates were served to the members by hostesses Simon, Cassandra McCain and Mitzie Gardiner. Also in attendance were guests Julie Anna Manale, Butch Ousse and Sheila Faulk; members, Jo-anne Arnaud, Margaret Brunson, Joan Hernandez, Flo Jones, Joanna Pruitt, Alma Reed and Camille Reed.
