Parish awarded emergency food, shelter funds
Acadia Parish has ben chosen to receive $24,237 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the parish during 2009.
Private or public voluntary organizations interested in applying for Emergency Food and Shelter Program funds must contact Margaret Trahan at the United Way of Acadiana by poning (337) 706-1232 for an application. The deadline for applications from local agencies is January 23, 2009. Once the funds have been distributed to local agencies, then individuals from Acadia Parish may apply for assistance through the local agencies.
A Local Board made up of representatives from United Way of Acadiana, local municipalities and the faith community as well as some at-large members will determine how the funds awarded to Acadia Parish are to be distributed among the emergency food and shelter programs run by local service organizations in the area, The Local Board is responsible for recommending agencies to receive these fund!. and any additional funds available under this phase of the program.
Acadia Parish has distributed Emergency Food and Shelter funds previously with the Acadia Council on Aging, Crowley Christian Care Center Ms. Helen’s Soup Kitchen and The Assist Agency part participating.
The award amount for Acadia Parish was determined by a National Board that is chaired by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and consists of representatives from The Salvation Army, American Red Cross, United Jewish Communities, Catholic Charities, USA, National Council of the Churches of Christ in the U.S.A. and United Way of America which will provide the administrative staff and function as fiscal agent. The Board was charged to distribute funds appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas around the country.
