Parish Council supports tax election resolution

Tangipahoa Parish Council members supported a resolution for a new tax election for the Ponchatoula recreation district during the August 25 meeting although not without much discussion from council members. "Though the area is in my district, no one contacted me about putting it on the agenda or explained the new tax," Councilman Carlo Notariano explained. "I can understand not being contacted if it were just a renewal," he added.

A 10-mill tax is already in place for the district. The council is now looking to add an additional four mills on the November 4 ballot for voter approval. Parish Council Chairman Bobby Cortez told council members that he understood the tax would be used to build a gymnasium multipurpose building. Councilwoman Debbie Edwards, who represents a portion of the Ponchatoula area said, "The people will ultimately decide whether they want to do this or not." In further discussion, Notariano explained that he didn't necessarily oppose the resolution. However, he would have liked a phone call. Edwards made the motion to approve, and it passed unanimously.

Bond Attorney Jim Ryan, who arrived late, apologized to council members for not notifying them. "I just assumed board members had contacted the council," he said.
