Parish livestock show on Jan. 23

The 35th Annual Vermilion Parish Jr. Livestock Show is set for Friday, Jan. 23 at 6 a.m. and ends with Saturday’s Livestock Sale which starts at 12:30 p.m. 

This year’s sheep, goat and swine judge will be Louis Lirette, County Agent, Iberville Parish, and the beef judge will be Rodney Johnson, County Agent, Rapides Parish.

The schedule of events will be:

FRIDAY

6:00 a.m. - 8:00 a.m. Arrival of sheep, swine and goats and check health papers.  Weigh and tag market animals.  Mouth breeding sheep and goats.

11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Arrival of beef animals

9:30 a.m.   Swine Showmanship Contest will be held in the following order: 

15 years and over; 13-14 year olds; 11-12 year olds; 9-10 year olds.

Then the Breeding Hogs and Market Hog Show will be held.  

Sheep Showmanship will be held in the following order: 

15 years and over; 13-14 year olds; 11-12 year olds; 9-10 year olds.

This will be followed by the Breeding Sheep, Market Lambs.
   Next will be Goat Showmanship in the following order:

14 & Over; 13 & Under.

This will be followed by Breeding Goats and Market goats.   That will be followed by Beef Showmanship in the following order:9-10 year olds; 11-12 year olds; 13-14 year olds;  15 years and over.

SATURDAY

7:30 a.m.   Beginning with Dairy followed by Dairy Showmanship.  Beef Breeding will follow in  the following order: Commercial Heifers, Santa Gertrudis, Brahman, Braford, Beefmaster, Brangus, AOB Short Hair, Angus, and AOB Long Hair.   At 12:15 p.m. will be the presentation of showmanship awards and at 12:30 prompt will be the sale of market hogs, goats and market hogs.

 There will be 39 sheep, 115 hogs, 11 goats and 130 head of cattle on exhibit during the show.  One hundred seventy-three 4-H members will be showing the animals in hopes of taking home a top award.  The public is invited to attend the show and sale.

The annual event is sponsored by the Vermilion Parish Police Jury, School Board, Cattlemen’s Association, Cattlewomen’s Association, Rice Grower’s Association, Farm Bureau Association, and Ag Coalition in cooperation with the LSU Agricultural Center’s Cooperative Extension Service.
