Parish's unemployment rate is 5.2 percent

Vermilion Parish’s unemployment rose slightly in January, according to the Louisiana WorkForce Commission.

The parish’s unemployment rate is 5.2 percent, up from 5.1 percent in December.

A total of 30 more people lost their jobs in January compared to December, for a total of 1,251 unemployed people in January.

Vermilion Parish has one of the highest unemployment rates in Acadiana. Lafayette Parish has one of the lowest in the state at 3.7 percent. Iberia Parish’s rate is 4.5 and St. Martin Parish is also at 4.5 percent.

Acadia Parish has an unemployment rate of 4.8 percent.

Nationally, the unemployment rate is 8.5 percent, while statewide it is 5.1 percent

Seasonally adjusted nonfarm employment for Louisiana was estimated at 1,936,300 in January 2009. This represents a loss of 12,300 jobs over the month but a net gain of 4,800 jobs since January 2008. Over the year, the largest employment increase was in construction, which gained 6,800 positions.

This was followed by educational and health services, which added 5,300 jobs in the state.

Over the month, eight of the eleven industry sectors had decreases in employment while three increased in the state.

The largest over-the-month decline occurred in professional and business services, which lost 4,100 jobs in the state.

This was followed by educational and health services, which posted a monthly loss of 2,900 positions. The only industry groups to post a monthly gain were construction (+900), leisure and hospitality (+400), and other services (+200).

Over the year, five of the eleven industry sectors showed an increase from January 2008 in the state. After construction and educational and health services, the largest yearly gain was in government, which posted an increase of 4,300 jobs. Other increases included leisure and hospitality (+2,000) and mining and logging (+1,300). The largest over-the-year job loss occurred in trade, transportation, and utilities, which shed 6,600 jobs followed closely by manufacturing which lost 6,400 compared to January 2008.

The January preliminary seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for Louisiana was 5.2 percent, a decrease from the December revised rate of 5.5 percent. The national unemployment rate for January was 7.6 percent, an increase from the December rate of 7.2 percent. Total unemployment in the state for January was 107,087. The state civilian labor force decreased to 2,090,557, with a decrease in total employment to 1,983,470.
