Paving the way for street work

BREAUX BRIDGE – The City Council Tuesday accepted the low bid of H&S Construction Co. of Broussard for $2,656,388.42 to resurface streets all over town.

Engineer Calvin Courville of Domingue Szabo & Associates, Inc., of Lafayette, said the bids – including one from St. Martinville’s M. Matt Durand – were higher than he expected but still a fair market price.

Like gasoline, the price of asphalt has been slow in reflecting the retreating cost of crude oil, Courville said.

“Whether it will continue to go down or go up is not certain,” he said in recommending acceptance of the bid.

The City of Breaux Bridge borrowed $3 million 3.66 percent interest to do the work.

Courville said there’s enough money in the budget to do all of the streets in Priority I and II and half a dozen streets in Priority III. He said the crews will tackle Main Street first and then let geography and logistics determine their progress rather than bounce all over town to follow the list on paper.

All the streets should be down within four months, he said.

The streets were assigned priorities based on their condition and the amount of traffic they normally carry.
