Pesticide recertification, worker protection standards meetings set
By Barrett Courville
Pesticide re-certification and Worker Protection Standards Meetings have been scheduled at the County Agents Office, 157 Cherokee Drive, in Crowley.
Here are the dates and times for these training meetings:
Wednesday, March 4
Private Applicator Pesticide Re-Certification - 10:00 - 11:30 a.m.
Wednesday, March 11
Private Applicator Pesticide Re-Certification – 1:30 – 3:00 p.m.
PESTICIDE RE-CERTIFICATION: If you are already certified as a private applicator, check the expiration date on your certification card. If your certification expires in March, you are eligible for re-certification.
If your certification expired prior to March, or you wish to become certified, you will have to take a closed book examination.
The examination can be taken at the County Agents Office any time during regular business hours.
At the conclusion of the Private Applicator Training, those in attendance will receive re-certification from the Department of Agriculture for a Private Applicator’s License.
This license is valid for three years, and will allow you to purchase and use restricted pesticides. The cost of the license, which is $25, must be paid the day of the certification. Cash or check will be accepted.
WORKER PROTECTION TRAINING: The Environmental Protection Agency regulations concerning Worker Protection Standards (WPS) for agricultural pesticides became effective January, 1995.
Since most farm employees do some handling of pesticides at some time or another while performing their duties, they should be classified as handlers and will need to be certified as such.
The meetings will consist of a film for farm employees to watch and should last one and one-half to two hours.
Participants in the workshops should be prepared to sign a registration form with their addresses and social security number.
The workshop is being offered free of charge and the WPS certification is free and valid for three years.
Farm employees who are in possession of a current private or commercial pesticide applicator permit do not need the WPS certification. Also, immediate family members of farmers do not need this WPS training.
I would like to encourage all agricultural producers to take advantage of these training opportunities, as you are required by law to provide the training for your employees.
All interested persons are invited to attend. If you have a disability which requires special assistance for your participation in the meetings, please contact the County Agents Office at 788-8821. If you have any questions, please call.
