Petitjean family home burns to ground

RAYNE – The two-story dwelling of the Martin Petitjean III family was totally destroyed after a fire broke out at the residence at near 1 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

The home, located on the Petitjean Farm northwest of Rayne at 2230 West Jeff Davis Avenue, was totally engulfed when members of the Rayne Police Department arrived.

Sources at the scene claim a pick-up truck parked under a covering near the home first broke out in fire, later igniting the house.

Fire pumpers at the scene were supplied by volunteers with the Branch Fire Department, Rayne Fire Department and Mire Fire Department. The shuttle trucks had to travel in excess of a mile to get water from inside the City of Rayne.

A prevailing north wind fueled the fire with flames shooting several hundred feet into the air. The blaze was brought under control in less than two hours.

There were no injuries and no other damage on the farm.
