Pickney retiring as principal this week
Central Middle School Principal Horace Pickney is retiring Friday, 35 years after launching his career in education.
The St. Landry School Board is accepting applications until 1 p.m. that day for the principal’s post.
Pickney, 61, has been principal at the middle school, which has fifth- and sixth-grade students, since the 1999-2000 school year.
Asked his plans, Pickney said he’ll take it easy until January, then look at his options.
Pickney has served as pastor at Community Bible Fellowship Church for the past nine years. He plans to continue his ministry and seek a supplemental part-time job.
He added, “I would like to keep in touch with Central, maybe come in from time to time to volunteer at school.
“I am going to leave all my options open.
“I will miss the children here, more than anything else, and the teachers. The teachers are part of my family, a family away from home. I will miss working with them and communicating with them. I will miss my leaders also, my superintendents, and my supervisors.”
Pickney started his teaching career at Highland Elementary in 1973 as a Career Opportunity Program aide. He became a classroom teacher at Highland in the spring of 1975.
Pickney, 61, has been married to O’Relia Godfrey Pickney for 36 years. He is the father of three sons and four daughters;and grandfather of 10.
