Pine Prairie completes district sweep

The Pine Prairie Lady Panthers clinched district with a perfect 12-0 record. They won their last three games by a combined 24-2 score. With the district schedule over, the Lady Panthers now begin to sharpen their skills in order to make a playoff run. They are currently ranked third in the Class 2A power ratings. The playoff seeding meeting in slated for Friday, April 11th, at 10 a.m. at Alexandria Senior High School.
The Panthers clinched the title outright with a 6-0 victory over the Opelousas Catholic Lady Vikings. Senior pitcher Chelsey Fontenot threw her sixth no-hitter of the year in this game. She worked all seven innings, fanning 12 batters and allowing just two walks.
The Lady Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Courtney Townsend singled and scored on an error forced by Ashley Marcantel. Four runs crossed the plate in the top of the fifth frame. Fontenot and Townsend drew back to back walks to begin the inning. Billie Manuel singled to load the bases with no outs. Marcantel singled in one run, but the next two batters flew out. Senior catcher Kayla Johnson came to the plate and worked herself into a full count situation. The superstar catcher hit a full-count pitch over the right fielder’s head for a base-clearing triple.
The PPHS girls picked up an insurance run in the seventh inning. Maddison Murray reached base on an error and scored on a single from Alex Deville.
Pine Prairie beat Ville Platte High 15-0 on Monday. Fontenot fanned the nine batters Ville Platte High sent to the plate. She recorded another no-hitter. The Lady Panthers scored eight runs in the first inning, three in the second and four in the third to win the contest. Elizabeth Briley was 2-3 with a double. Kayla Johnson, Emily Marcantel, Billie Manuel and Joshlyn Adams each hit a double in the contest.
It took a one-run victory for Pine Prairie to wrap up their district schedule. They slipped by the Lady Crusaders of Westminster with a 3-2 victory Thursday. Chelsey Fontenot got the victory in the circle. The senior went all seven innings. She scattered three hits and allowed just one earned run. She fanned 13 batters in the game and improved her record to 22-5 on the year.
The Lady Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Fontenot doubled and later scored on a series of walks. The top of the third inning saw two more runs cross the plate for Pine Prairie. Alex Deville doubled to begin the inning. She would cross the dish on a double from Katie Reed. Later in the inning, Reed found her way home on a passed ball.
The 3-0 lead would be just enough for the Lady Panthers to get the victory. Westminster scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. A combination of walks and errors nearly allowed the Lady Crusaders to tie the game.
Madison Murray was 2-3 on the day for the local girls. Alex Deville was 1-4 with a double and Kayla Johnson was 1-3 with a double.
