Pine Prairie dominates AD baseball team
By: LANCE REED
The All-District 6-2A baseball team was selected recently. With all four Evangeline Parish teams competing in the same district, it was very likely there would be several high school baseball players from EP on that team. In fact, a total of 18 players made either the first or second team and several players received honorable mentions.
Mamou junior Kaleb Manuel and Sacred Heart freshman Taylor Veillon both made the first team as pitchers. Manuel finished the year with 72 strikeouts and an earned run average of 2.32. Veillon finished the season with an ERA of 1.70 with 31 strikeouts.
Pine Prairie’s senior first baseman Kyle Maricle batted .375 with five doubles. Fellow senior teammate Jonathan Fontenot was also selected to the team. Fontenot batted .463 on the year with three home runs. He drove in 16 runs and hit 10 doubles. Bryant Firmin, also a senior at PPHS, was selected for the shortstop position. Firmin batted .556 with four home runs and drove in 18 runs. He picked up nine doubles and a triple for the Panthers. Zack Blood is another senior on the Pine Prairie baseball team. The third baseman was honored with a first team selection. He batted .514 on the year with a home run and 12 runs batted in. He drove seven doubles and a triple as well. He also led the PPHS team with 11 walks.
The outfield had another member of the PPHS baseball team selected. Junior Ashton Dupre batted .515 on the year with three doubles and 11 RBIs. Dupre committed just one error all year in the outfield.
Three baseball players from Evangeline Parish were named first team utility players. Westminster’s James Fontenot, a junior, is a native of Ville Platte. He batted .242 with three doubles and a pair of triples. He walked 12 times and scored 14 runs. Pine Prairie’s Brandon Guillory is another senior who wears the orange and black. He batted .417 on the year for the Panthers. Sacred Heart’s Derek Fontenot was named to the first team. The senior catcher batted .419 with a home run and drove in 11 runs.
Several players from EP were placed on the second team. Senior Caleb West (PPHS), Jacob Ardoin (SHHS) and Freddie Chapman (VPHS) were each named at the pitching spot. Mamou’s Sal Montelaro was tabbed as the second team catcher. Stuart Schexnayder, a sophomore was selected as the second baseman and fellow Trojan Brody Fontenot (JR) was named the shortstop.
Sacred Heart senior Seth LeBlanc and Pine Prairie senior Robert Vidrine were named to the second team as outfielders.
Several players received an Honorable Mention on the AD team: Kaleb Johnson and Trevor LeBlanc (PPHS), Denzel Frank, Hunter Christ, Corey Guillory and Matt Landreneau (Mamou) and Brandon Manuel and Ian David (SHHS) all received an HM.
Congratulations go out to all of the baseball players in Evangeline Parish who received recognition the 2008 All-District 6-2A baseball team.
