Pios split scrimmage doubleheader at Acadiana
LAFAYETTE – The Notre Dame Pioneers continued preparations for the upcoming 2013 prep baseball season with a pair of eight inning scrimmages at Acadiana High School Saturday afternoon.
The Pios dropped the first game, 3-0, to Comeaux, but they rebounded shortly afterward with an 8-0 victory over Acadiana.
In the first game, the Pios gave up just three hits, but they committed two costly errors that led to all of Comeaux’s runs.
Brad Stoma worked two scoreless innings to start the game before Wyatt Sullivan gave up one run in his two innings courtesy of a throwing error.
Jacques Thibodeaux was tagged for two runs, both unearned, in three innings and Kyle Habetz pitched the final inning.
Stoma and Thibodeaux each had a single in the contest.
The Pios fared much better in the second game as three pitchers limited the Rams to just one hit in the shutout.
Habetz gave up Acadiana’s lone hit in the second inning. He walked one and struck out two in two innings of work.
Joe Faulk and Alex Rozas each pitched three innings and combined for four walks and four strikeouts.
The Pios took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Rozas scored on a grounder to first base by Thibodeaux.
Notre Dame extended its advantage in the sixth inning when Brennan Corzine’s grounder to second base was misplayed, allowing two runs to score. Rozas then singled to right field to plate Corzine, giving the Pios a 4-0 cushion.
Royce Zaunbrecher drove in a pair of runs in the seventh with a single to center and two more runs crossed th*e plate in the eighth on a bases-loaded walk to Shea Zaunbrecher and a grounder to second by Dillan Gilbert.
The Pios will officially kick the 2013 season off on Saturday when they travel to Lafayette to participate in the Teurlings Jamboree.
The Pios jayvee team will take on Westminster at 11:30 a.m. before both varsity teams play each other at 12:45 p.m.
Notre Dame and Teurlings will play a jayvee game at 2 p.m. before squaring off in another varsity contest at 3:15 p.m.
In other action, the Crowley Gents suffered a 4-2 scrimmage loss at Simpson on Saturday.
No further information on that game was made available by the school.
The Gents return to action on Wednesday when they play host to Breaux Bridge. The jayvee contest is slated for 2:45 p.m. with the varsity to follow.
