ESTHERWOOD – A private airplane was completely destroyed by fire Wednesday afternoon at LeGros Airport.

Owner Darrell Jacks and his son Brent LeDoux were servicing the plane, a Cessna 172, at the time of the fire.

“We were working on the aircraft and found there was some difficulty with movement of the fuel selector,” LeDoux said. “We had drained all of the fuel from the plane but I guess there was a residue and here are the results,” he said while pointing to the heap of charred metal.

The four-seater airplane was parked just outside Jacks’ hanger when the fire took place. “My Dad and We went into the hangar to reference a manual on the plane when we heard the engine trying to crank. We then turned around and could see the prop turning and smoke coming from the front glass,” LeDoux said. “We immediately called 911 then ran out of a side door in fear of the plane rolling into the hanger and trapping us,” he said.

Officials with the Morse and Estherwood Fire Departments responded to the scene, as did first responders with the Acadia Parish Sheriff’s office and paramedics with Acadian Ambulance Service.
