Plans proceed for Tourist Commission

By Lisa Soileaux - Assistant Editor

Future plans were the main topic of last week’s meeting of the Acadia Parish Tourist Commission held Thursday, March 12, 2009 at the Tourist Commission Office in Crowley.

The main order of business discussed by the board, spear-headed by Chairman Paul Broussard, who presented a resolution in making application to the State Bond Commission for consent and authority to issue, sell and deliver not exceeding the Certificate of Indebtedness for the purchase of the 7.04 acre parcel adjacent to the current information center, which will be the future site of the Acadia Parish Convention and Conference Center Complex. The resolution application motion was offered by Frances Bihm and seconded by Charlotte Jeffers, with all other board members in agreement.

The Bond Commission meets on April 19, with the Acadia Parish Police Jury on April 7 for the approval of application to the Bond Commission.

In addition, the proposed property was appraised since the last Commission meeting, with value expected to rise once the future service road is added. The property was also surveyed and staked, as noted by Broussard.

The future of the Tourist Commission Office was also discussed by commission president Cheryl McCarty and Executive Director Gwen Hanks, who gave a report of the repairs recently completed on the 9-year-old office structure. Bids were collected for painting the new hardy plank siding applied during renovations and awarded to Burton Hargrave. Anticipated work needed on the outside bathrooms were also discussed.

Bihm gave a report on the website committee concerning advertising and marketing plans. She noted that updating the website is in the works as a new and improved site will be available soon.

Under old business, Steve Carrier of Church Point was elected by the Commission. The new member-at-large will come before the Acadia Parish Police Jury’s April meeting for approval; afterwhich, will begin his term at the Commission’s April meeting.

With no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
