Post 15 Millers top Seminoles to remain unbeaten
CROWLEY – The Crowley Post 15 Millers continued their tear through the American Legion District 7 East slate Monday, topping the Opelousas Seminoles, 6-0, at Miller Stadium.
The victory sent the Millers to 5-0 on the season and gave them a two-game cushion over second-place Eunice (3-2). The Seminoles, who have two rainouts still to make up, fell to 0-3.
Monday’s victory wasn’t as eventful as the previous four for the locals.
The Millers were only able to muster four hits in the contest, but they took advantage of numerous errors and wild pitches to secure the victory.
Crowley left three runners stranded in the first two innings before finally getting on the board in the third. Beau Desselle drilled a triple over Seminole center fielder Caleb Roberie and then scored on a single to center by Matt Savoie to put the Millers up 1-0.
Opelousas aided the Millers’ cause in the fourth inning, committing two costly errors that led to four unearned runs.
Blaine Richard and Brian Broussard both reached on errors to start the inning before a wild pitch plated the first run of the frame. A one-out walk to Jake Trahan put runners on the corners for the Millers before a fielder’s choice off the bat of Ryan Leonards allowed Broussard to score. Trahan and Leonards both scored on wild pitches to increase the Millers’ lead to 5-0.
Savoie scored the Millers’ final run when he tripled to start the fifth frame and scored on a single to left by Justin Desselle.
Leonards was spectacular on the mound, carrying a no-hit bid into the top of the fifth inning before Darrin Handy doubled to left with one out. Opelousas’ scoring threat ended three pitches later when Nathan Lewellyn lined out to Savoie at third base, who in turn fired to second base, catching Handy off the bag to complete the double play.
The Oilers threatened again in the sixth when James Fontenot doubled to right field with two outs and then stole third. Leonards got out of the jam on a flyout to Taylor Bertrand in right.
Leonards picked up the complete-game victory, giving up just three hits while striking out seven.
Opelousas’ Jarryd Pitre suffered the loss, giving up five runs, one earned, on two hits and five walks. He struck out three in four innings of work.
Savoie led the Millers with a 2-for-2 performance that included a walk, a triple and a RBI. Beau Desselle had a triple and Justin Desselle singled and drove in a run.
Handy and Fontenot each had a double for the Seminoles and Roberie finished with one hit, an infield single.
The Millers return to action this evening when they travel to Rayne to take on Notre Dame’s independent team in a non-district contest at Legion Field. First pitch for that contest is slated for 6 o’clock.
