Post-Signal claims eight LPA awards

The Crowley Post-Signal was presented eight awards, including three first-place plaques, during the 133rd Annual Louisiana Press Association Convention Saturday in Baton Rouge.

Competing in Division 4 against newspapers of comparable size and distribution, local top honors went to:

• Howell Dennis, Best Regular Column.

• Alicia Huesers and Pam Venissat, Multiple Advertiser Page (Cosmetology Month).

• The paper’s advertising, production and editorial staffs for Best Special Section (Rice Festival Cookbook).

Angie Longon and Venissat garnered second place recognition for Staff-Generated Black & White ad with a promotion for the Crowley Summer Baseball Camp.

Janet Doucet and Venissat teamed up for a pair of third place certificates.

Their efforts on an advertisement for Louisiana Church Interiors were recognized in the Best Retailer Ad category while the promotion for ISIS Snow Cones and Snacks won honors in the Best Non-Tradition Use of Space - Ad category.

The Post-Signal’s Classified Page also garnered a third-place award in Division 4.

Dennis also earned an Honorable Mention in the Best Feature Story category.

The Advocate (Baton Rouge), the American Press (Lake Charles), the Tri-Parish Times & Business News (Houma), the St. Charles Herald-Guide (Boutte), L’Observateur (LaPlace) and The Zachary Plainsman News earned Newspaper of the Year honors in their respective divisions at the convention.

The designation for the Newspaper of the Year is based on the number of points earned in the Better Newspaper Editorial Competition and the Better Newspaper Advertising Competition for 2012 with awards being given in individual contests for first, second, third places and honorable mention. The editorial contests range from news story writing to graphic design while the advertising entries were judged based on design, creativity and effectiveness.

Judges from Alabama, Arkansas and Mississippi critiqued 3,561 entries from 74 Louisiana newspapers, publications and student publications.

Earning sweepstakes awards in the editorial competition were The Advocate, American Press, Tri-Parish Times & Business News, Minden Press-Herald, L’Observateur and Kentwood News-Ledger.

Earning sweepstakes awards in the advertising competition were The Advocate, American Press, Ruston Daily Leader, Bogalusa Daily News, The Plaquemines Gazette (Belle Chasse) and the Zachary Plainsman News.
