Poverty Point night hike scheduled

At 6 p.m. on November 8, Poverty Point State Historic Site will be presenting a night hike. Participants will be given a nighttime guided tour around the earthworks located on our site.

There will be talks on the local plants seen along the way. Visitors may also experience the many night creatures that are busy gathering food, roaming the area at night. There will also be some storytelling and a good chance for some family fun around a campfire. Also, the owl is a nocturnal creature that is accustomed to the dark. In fact, it is the owl’s favorite time of the day, so an owl prowl will be conducted as well. Be sure to wear weather appropriate clothing and comfortable walking shoes.

Poverty Point SHS offers visitors the opportunity to study the culture of area inhabitants from 1600 to 1100 B. C. The $2 day-time admission to the historic site provides access to the museum, video and self-guided nature tour. Guided tram tours which depart at 9:30 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 2:00 p.m., and 3:30 p.m., are also available. Children (12 and under) and senior citizens (62 and over) are admitted free. Poverty Point is located in West Carroll Parish, east of Monroe on La 577. For more information, call 1-888-926-5492 toll free or 926-5492 locally or email at povertypoint@crt.state.la.us.
