Prep Roundup: Crowley High, Notre Dame pick up district victories; Lady Pios fall short

ERATH – The Notre Dame Pioneers opened District 5-AAA play Thursday with a bang.

The Pios (17-1, 1-0) hit three home runs and collected 11 hits en route to an 11-0 victory over the Erath Bobcats.

The Bobcats, on the other hand, we limited to just three hits by ND standout Austin Robichaux. The hard-throwing right hander earned the victory, hurling six innings before the game was halted due to the mercy rule.

The Pios got on the board in the second inning when Brennan Corzine and Nick Gossen recorded RBI singles. Paiton McBride also drove home a run on a sacrifice fly to give the Pios’ a 3-0 advantage.

Mitch Corzine and Luke Bourgeois each had two-run singles in the fifth inning to increase the lead to 7-0.

In the sixth, the Pios caught fire.

With two outs, Gossen drove a 1-2 pitch over the left field wall for a solo home run. Bourgeois followed with a homer of his own one pitch later and, after Mitch Corzine singled to center field, Connor Goss put the finishing touches on the game with a two-run blast to left center field.

The Pios will be in action again this evening when they play host to Rayne in another 5-AAA matchup. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.

CHS 11, Northwest 1

CROWLEY – The Crowley Gents improved to 6-7 overall and 1-1 in District 4-AAA play Tuesday with an 11-1 victory over the Northwest Raiders at Miller Stadium.

Three Crowley pitchers combined to limit the Raiders to just three hits in the game that was halted in the fifth inning due to the mercy rule.

Chad Hoffpauir was credited with the victory after giving up one run on one hit and four walks. He struck out six in two innings of work.

Mackay Mouton pitched two innings before Steven Bertrand was brought on to close the game in the fifth.

The Gents also had a field day at the plate, collecting 13 hits.

Kaplan 6, ND 5

CROWLEY – Notre Dame’s Lady Pios took a 2-1 lead over league-leading Kaplan Tuesday heading into the seventh and final inning.

And then the wheels fell off.

Notre Dame committed seven errors in the top of the seventh, allowing Kaplan to forge ahead 6-2.

A three-run rally by the Lady Pios was too little, too late in a 6-5 loss.

The Lady Pios fell to 13-8 on the season and 3-2 in District 5-AAA play. Kaplan improved to 15-4 and 5-0.

Kaplan sent nine batters to the plate in the top of the seventh. The Lady Pirates recorded just two hits but scored five runs courtesy of Notre Dame’s seven miscues.

Notre Dame rallied back in the bottom of the frame.

Taylor Boulet reached base on an error and Charlotte Brown singled to give the Lady Pios runners at second and third. Boulet eventually scored on an error and Brown scored on a double by Katherin Kirsch. Heidi Bellard then hit a one out triple to plate Kirsch but was left stranded after a strikeout and groundout to end the game.

Amelia Lavergne suffered the loss, giving up six runs, one earned, on four hits and four walks in seven innings of work.

The Lady Pios logged seven hits in the contest.

Taylor Simon led the way with a 2-for-3 performance that included a triple. Kirsch followed with a double and two RBI and Bellard had a triple and one RBI.

Also contributing for the Lady Pios were Alexa Thibodeaux, Maranda LeBlanc and Megan Murrell with one hit each and Taylor Boulet with two runs driven in.

The Lady Pios will be in action again today when they play host to Erath at 4 p.m.
