Queb’s Picks: Kernan leads the pack
By Chris Quebedeaux
The first week of the Crowley Post-Signal Football contest is in the books and it looks like 2008’s overall winner is starting where he left off last season.
Don Kernan, who logged the best overall record last year to claim the $100 prize, edged out Todd Lormand on a tiebreaker to claim top honors during the opening week with just four losses.
Nine other contestants, including myself, were just one game off with five losses.
Some, however, weren’t as lucky.
Five contestants finished with double-digit losses. Calvin Mire rounded out the group, edging out Mary Reed by one game with 14 losses.
Now, will all that out of the way, it’s on to this week’s picks:
The first one - and it is a tough one - is Notre Dame at Breaux Bridge.
I know the Tigers have everyone returning in the offensive backfield and they sport one of the most talented receiving corps in the area. I also know that the Tigers are coming off a season-opening loss to Westgate and should be pretty geared up this week, especially after losing the last three meetings with Notre Dame.
However, I also know the Pios seem to find ways to win even when the odds are stacked against them.
After much thought and consultation from my associate, Andrew Sarver, I have to go with the Pioneers in a tight one.
I am also taking Crowley over Abbeville this week. The Gents looked a little sluggish on both sides of the football last week for most of the game against Jennings, but I think they will be clicking on all cylinders tonight in their home opener.
In other local games, I’m taking Iota over St. Edmund, Church Point over Avoyelles and Welsh over Rayne.
In prep games out of the area I’m going with Eunice over Jennings, Parkview over Acadiana, Evangel over Sulphur, Westgate over Patterson, Redemptorist over St. James, St. Louis over Cecilia and Coach Kevin Magee’s Comeaux Spartans over Northside.
In the college ranks, I’m going out on a limb and taking my Michigan Wolverines to upset Notre Dame in the Big House. It’s a stretch, but, man, did the Maze and Blue look good last week.
In other Big Ten action, I’m taking USC over Ohio State. Navy gave the Buckeyes a run for their money last week in the build up to this week’s showdown while the Trojans coasted to an easy victory behind a true freshman quarterback.
In the SEC, I’m taking LSU over Vanderbilt, The Tigers knocked off the rust last week and should perform a lot better in Death Valley.
I’m also taking Georgia over South Carolina and Lane Kiffin’s Tennessee Volunteers over UCLA.
On the home front, I’m taking Kansas State over ULL and Appalachian State over McNeese.
I’m also going with BYU over Tulane, Georgia Tech over Clemson and North Carolina over Connecticut.
