Queb's Picks: Final Week

By Chris Quebedeaux

CROWLEY – The final week of the Crowley Post-Signal Football contest is finally upon us and the race for the top overall prize is closer than ever.

Don Kernan still leads the pack, increasing his lead by one game after going 15-6 last week. He now has just 60 losses on the season.

Kernan is followed closely by Derek Frey with 62 losses and Blaise Frey with 63. The Frey brothers each lost seven games last week.

Last week’s first- and second-place winners also finished with a record of 15-6, edging Kernan and three others by virtue of the tiebreaker. Brent Theunissen took top honors and Kye Cantey was the runnerup.

George Perry garnered the final boobie prize of the year, finishing with the week’s worst record at 9-12.

As for myself, I finished at 12-9, giving me 78 losses on the year.

Now on to the picks:

Starting in the prep ranks, I’m going to do something that will shock a number of people.

All year long, people have asked me how I could pick against my own alma mater (Crowley High) numerous times, but never pick against cross town rival Notre Dame.

Plain and simple - I never thought the Pios would lose.

This week, however, is another story.

Even with a healthy team, I figured Notre Dame’s quarterfinal contest against Redemptorist tonight could go either way. But with Ryan Leonards out and all the pressure on the defense and an inexperienced quarterback, whoever it may be, I have to pick the Wolves.

Not that the Pios won’t win, but on paper, the Wolves have the edge.

I’m also going against the only other Acadiana area team – Cecilia - and taking Lutcher to beat the Bulldogs. It should be a great game, but winning at Lutcher is always a tough task. Years ago, St. Martinville coach Carroll Delahoussaye will tell you, he took a talented Tigers team to Lutcher and rode a 747 home (as in 7-47 loss).

In other prep semifinal action, I’m taking Destrehan over Central, Barbe over West Monroe, Bastrop over Belle Chasse, John Curtis over Calvary, St. James over Evangel, Delhi Charter over Christian Life, South Plaquemines over Haynesville, Salmen over Shaw.

In college action, I have to go with Alabama over Florida. For one, I hate Urban Meyer and for two, I still love Nick Saban - unlike most LSU fans.

I’m also not a fan of Oklahoma and would hate to see them in the national championship game. For that reason alone I’m taking Missouri to upset the Sooners.

I’m also taking Troy over Arkansas State, West Virginia over South Florida, Tulsa over East Carolina, USC over UCLA, Navy over Army, Arizona over Arizona State, Cincinnati over Hawaii and Florida International over Western Kentucky.
