Queb's Picks: Week 8 highlighted by district showdowns

From barn burners to shootouts, Week 8 of the 2011 prep football season has matchups that should provide more than enough excitement for everyone.

Three local games headline the list of games on this week’s Crowley Post-Signal Football Contest and each are crucial for the respective teams.

Notre Dame appears to have finally found its stride and has reeled off back-to-back District 4-3A victories over Iowa and Jennings, but the Pios face another stiff challenge in Westlake this week.

Crowley High is also 2-0 in league play, but the Gents will be tested by a very fast and athletic Jennings squad that went toe-to-toe with Notre Dame two weeks ago before slipping past Westlake, 41-40, on the road last week.

And last but not least, there is the big rivalry game between Rayne and Church Point.

But before we get into all the details, let’s go over last week’s results.

Keith Guillotte pulled off his second victory in the last three weeks by going 17-3. Andrew Sarver beat out seven other contestants on the tiebreaker to claim runnerup honors with a 16-4 record. He was the only one to pick Eunice over Livonia .

As for myself, I had another subpar week with a 15-5 record.

But enough about my misfortunes, it’s time for this week’s picks.

High School

Notre Dame over Westlake – Westlake has played well the last few weeks and could make this one interesting. It could be a nail biter or a blowout. Either way, the Pios win.

Crowley over Jennings – This one should provide more fireworks than the Fourth of July. Both teams have explosive offenses and defensively, neither has been able to stop much. It could come down to who has the ball last.

Church Point over Rayne – Big rivalry games like this could go either way. However, I have to take the Point in this one. The Bears are playing well and they are at home.

Carencro over Acadiana – The Rams are good, but the Bears will outscore them.

Breaux Bridge over St. Thomas More – This should be one of the better games Friday. Coming off an upset loss to Teurlings last week, the Tigers will be up to the challenge.

Iota over Pine Prairie – The monkey comes off the back this week. Even with injuries mounting, the Bulldogs will pick up that elusive first victory.

Catholic High over Loreauville – Loreauville has some pretty talented running backs, no question. But Catholic’s defense has seen some explosive offenses in Teurlings and Notre Dame and they have held them to a combined 21 points.

University over Dunham – Dunham beat Capital 8-2 two weeks ago. U-High beat Capital 42-0 last week. Any questions?

College Games

ULL over Western Kentucky – I have my doubts about this one, but I can’t quite seem to pull myself off that bandwagon just yet. Cajuns win a close one.

LSU over Auburn – War Eagle pulling the upset in Death Valley ? Not gonna happen.

Louisiana College over Sul Ross State – Sul Ross State is 1-5. Enough for me.

Miami over Georgia Tech – This is a toss up, but I like the ‘Cains at home.

Alabama over Tennessee – Do I really have to give a reason for this one?

Wisconsin over Michigan State – State’s defense is pretty sick, but overall, Wisconsin is the better team.

Notre Dame over USC – The Irish are on a 4-game win streak and the offense is producing big time.

Oklahoma State over Missouri – Missouri has played both Arizona State and Oklahoma down to the wire. However, like I said before, Oklahoma State is the best team in the Big 12.

Florida State over Maryland – Going with the Seminoles in this one. Mainly because I still can’t seem to get over those horrible uniforms the Terps wear.

Clemson over North Carolina – It could be a good game if it was basketball season. Tigers win big.

Penn State over Northwestern – Another one of those tossups. Flip a coin.

Arizona over UCLA – Oddsmakers have the Cats favored by 3 1/2.
