Rayne’s Brittany Delco named UL-L outstanding graduate

The Spring 2011 Outstanding Graduates include a budding fashion designer who wants to put Louisiana’s fashion industry on the map, a student who wrote a short children’s book and a mechanical engineering major who plans to attend medical school.

A total of eight students will be honored as the UL Lafayette Alumni Association’s Outstanding Graduates from their respective academic colleges.

Each semester deans from the eight academic colleges nominate a student as an Outstanding Graduate based on leadership, scholarship and service. A selection committee with the Alumni Association interviews each candidate and selects one for the overall award.

Brittany Delco, daughter of Ursula Hawkins of Rayne, is the Outstanding Graduate for the College of General Studies.

She has concentrated on communicative disorders within the behavior sciences area and has achieved a 3.145 GPA. Delco has been named to the Dean’s List and President’s List, awarded the College of General Studies’ SGA scholarship, the three-time winner of the UL Lafayette Black Faculty and Staff Caucus Honor Student, and been involved in the Ronald E. McNair Post Baccalaureate Achievement Program. Since 2010, she has been a member of the Sigma Alpha Lambda National Leadership and Honors Organization, the Matthew Simmons Business Luncheon Honor recipient and nominated for Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.

Besides her scholastic achievements, Delco has been involved in campus organizations including UL Lafayette Pre-Professional Society, SGA Senator, UL Lafayette chapter of the NAACP, UL Lafayette National Student Speech Language Hearing Association, and UL Lafayette Blue Key Honor Society, where she has served as Community Chairperson.

Delco has volunteered for Healing House, Ebonite Civic and Social Club, Inc. Pals, Coats for Kids, Canned Food Drives and Toys for Tots. In addition, she has been a member of Cunningham Christian Methodist Episcopal Church her entire life.
