The Rayne High Wolves and Lady Wolves who are completing their senior campaign as members of the baseball and softball teams were honored during special ceremonies this week.
A lone member of the Wolves Baseball Team, Jacob Stelly, was honored Tuesday during Rayne High’s last regular season game against Port Barre.
And, the action didn’t stop there for Stelly.
The Wolves began Tuesday night’s action with a run in the first three innings, placing Rayne High with a 3-0 lead heading into the second half of the ballgame.
Following two scoreless innings by both teams, Port Barre took advantage of a couple of Rayne High errors, scoring three runs to tie things up at 3-all.
With a scoreless seventh inning, ending regulation play, the game went into extra innings where things got interesting.
The Rayne High defense held Port Barre and answered with the winning run with a play at the plate.
Stelly, who attained his only hit of his three at-bat for the day, got a jump off third with Bryce Meche at bat. On a passed ball, Stelly saw his chance and crossed the plate for the winning run.
Hunter Keely threw the first five innigs for the win, striking out 11 batters and allowing only one hit.Kameron Falcon finished up mound duties as he threw two strike outs while allowing three runs on two hits.
At the plate, Grant Menard was 2-for-4, Keely and Tyler LeJeune each 2-for-5, and Stelly, Meche and Gannon Quebodeaux each 1-for-3.
Scoring for Rayne were Stelly (2), Meche (1) and Matt Dore (1).
With the win, the Wolves stand at 6-2 in district, improving their power ranking for the anticipated playoffs. Remaining district action for rayne High includes all road games at Church Point (4/12), Eunice (4/17) and Westminster (4/19).
During last week’s home contest against Livonia, the Lady Wolves seniors, Bianca Threatts and Haley Habetz, were honored during Senior Night.
In the makeup game held against Livonia, the Lady Wolves’ last district contest of the 2011-2012 season, Rayne High claimed a 10-4 win and a final 6-4 district slate.
In Tuesday afternoon action, the Lady Wolves claimed a contest almost too close to call, going 11 innings on their home turf against Erath during a non-district contest as they prepare for post-season.
Coming down to the bottom of the 11th inning with the score tied at 1-all, senior pitcher Haley Habetz slapped a double in the gap, scoring Amanda Bourque and Alex Peltier for the win.
Habetz also picked up the win on the mound for the Lady Wolves.
The Lady Wolves were slated to traveled to Lafayette Wednesday where they were scheduled to take on St. Thomas More during their last warm-up game prior to the start of the state playoffs next week.
As of press time, the state brackets have not been announced. The final district standings will be released today (Thursday), with state pairings to be announced Friday. Updates will be listed at our website (www.acadiaparishtoday.com) as soon as announced.
